5. I'm getting it in 2 weeks |
|
as I put my 2 week notice in today. And my new job starts on the 16th.
I'm quite excited because I'll be out of the office most of the time talking with kids and then working with community groups. Also the co-workers I will have all seem to be full of hope and idealism. So I'll be happy to report back in two weeks!

After working in offices all my life (gag), 25 years as a legal secretary/paralegal, I now work at home as a legal transcriptionist, transcribing criminal and some child-in-need-of-aid trials for appeal purposes. It's really interesting, and I make my own hours. All I have to do is type -- I'm a subcontractor to the woman who does the production end of it. This is really a great life, but I definitely paid my dues ... working with lawyers can be a real bitch (no offense to the legal eagles among us).

19. I relied on all my years working in the legal field |
|
for the knowledge of legal terminology, etc., and facility at transcribing. The last five years or so that I was working in an office, I started doing a few transcripts on the side at home to make some extra money. I just contacted several of the court reporter agencies I knew and let them know I was available, got the "format" manual from the court system, a four-track transcriber and started in, mostly transcribing depositions and so on at first. (Now, all the trials are recorded to CD, so I have a different program for transcribing -- the foot pedal plugs into the joy stick port on my computer.)
In 2000 my law firm was downsized, and I decided I didn't want to stay with the people who were going to be left. Besides I was just tired of the whole office scene, and the attorney I worked for was a twit. By that time I had built up enough "cred" with the reporters I was working with that I was able to transition very nicely into doing it full time. The woman I'm working with now has a contract with the state, so the work I do for her is exclusively for state-funded appeals (i.e., the appellants are mostly represented by either the public defender agency or office of public advocacy).
I'm a real fan of true crime novels, CSI/L&O type TV and so on, so these trials are right up my alley. The criminals do all of us in the legal biz a real favor by doing what they do. We'd be lost without them. :toast:

22. Several years ago, I looked into becoming a court reporter... |
|
went to see a school about how long the course of study would be, how much $$, etc. It was going to take 3 years of study (over and above my 2 engineering degrees!). I decided to call several court reporters to find out how business was. What I learned from speaking with them, was that very few actually have steady work. If you can get on with a judge, or endear yourself to a law firm, then you would be set. But there are more court reporters than there are opportunities. So I let that go. However, I am a very good typist, and love anything legal, so that's why I was asking you about the legal transcriptionist.

For some reason we have a huge number of lawyers, lawsuits, and criminals (a higher rate of sex offenders per capita than any other state :woohoo: :sarcasm:), etc. etc. But I know it's kind of a big deal to learn the whole stenograph thing ... I didn't want to mess with that. Transcribing is just perfect ... we don't have stenographers in the courtroom, just the recorder and someone typing log notes, so at least for the time being, my job security is guaranteed.

At this point, I'd just like to be reminded of what it is like to have a real honest to God paying job.
I work on whether or not I actually like it and what to do about that later.
Laid off nearly 3 years ago and still a jobless schmuck....

How does one get into editing professionally? Do you have to have a journalism degree? I did some proofing and copy editing in college, but did not study it at all...

I am in IT for the school system here in Richmond, VA. Lots of liberal thinking folks, heavily democrat city surrounded by a sea of Red. I would do this job as a volunteer if I were wealthy and didn't need a job.

It is the perfect job for him in so many ways, yet we really wanted to move back to CA because both of our families are there...
I wish that life were easier. Here is your path.. not here are 10 paths, choose one... and Im not going to let you know what paths are coming up or what your destination is, or where it is, or how long it should take to get there.. good luck!
