I LIKED Matrix Revolutions...although I hated Reloaded [**SPOILERS**] |
|
Edited on Fri Nov-07-03 05:12 PM by AngryYoungMan
Anyone else feel this way?
The critics are pounding it, and their objections seem fair, etc...but, damn it, the Zion battle was one of the most outstanding sci-fi sequences I've ever seen, ever, ever. And the humanistic touches were nice. And I liked the weird Edward-Hopper-in-the-rain cityscape towards the end.
I guess I should try to keep this thread spoiler-free...

and was mildly disappointed, but still liked it and will see it again.
It is not a stand alone film -- it must be seen as a literal extension of "Reloaded". Because of that, I had a little trouble with the dramatic arc and the absence of some major characters for long stretches. I aslo wish there had been a little more energy and sense of urgency in some of the performances.
I liked the new charcters that were introduced and the ones that were expanded on (Niobe and Mifune, come to mind).
The fight for Zion, Niobe's wild rde, and the finale between Smith and Neo were excellent. You really got the sense of Zion being utterly overwhlemed by the machines.
Trinity's death was a little overdone and too pat, for me. And I have no confusion about the ending as some have had -- as a Buddhist, it was pretty clear what they were getting at.
Of course, I wanted more -- much more -- than they were able to deliver, but perhaps that is me being greedy.

4. i think it if you consider reloaded... |
|
...and revolutions as ONE big movie, the pacing makes a lot more sense. in that context, i thought this was actually the most engaging film of the entire series. i'm seeing it again tomorrow.

11. Yes, you are right.... |

about two and three being one big movie -- I wish to heck I had been able to see two and then go right to the theatre for three.
I can hardly wait for the inevitable triple-feature showings!

5. The zion fight was terrible. |
|
If the sentinels are so fricking advanced why are they flying single fiile directly into the fire of the machine gun?

They target the gunners, relentlessly, to devastating effect. Sure, their attrition rate is high, but that's not a consideration. Plus they fly in those complicated, ropy patterns that probably optimize their ability to fire in multiple directions...
...anyway the whole thing was a visual metaphor for the act of conception. Big buried sphere; screws and drills; flood of sperm. While Neo is doing his Christ routine, uniting the people with the machines, this big metaphorical sex act is going on between the two adverseries. It's not Kubrick but it's good.

7. There's one seen where a big stream of them... |

are flying right into the hero's line of fire. The ones that don't get shot go back to the back of the line to get shot again.

...about all of the matrix haters is that they don't seem to be very 'conceptually mature' if you know what i mean. subtext appears lost on them. i also question whether or not they like movies at all.
i mean, what do you want in a big budget sci-fi spectacle. Each matrix movie pushed the envelope and people are still bitching. why, because the movie was TOO ambitious?!?
look at this thread as a microcosm of why so many people can't get their brains around the shifting bullshit being floated about our attack of iraq. the 24 hour news cycle, daily talking points and mtv-bred attention spans have definitely created an environment where being incurious and resolute is honored above philosophy and speculation. sadly, many of our own are just as susceptible to this as those on the right.
anyway, back to the movie; don't you think it's unbelieveable that armageddon and independence day actually had MUCH better audience reaction than a sci-fi gem like the matrix revolutions has?
i rest my case.

i thought it just out and out rocked. you do have to consider reloaded and revolutions as one big movie. if they would release them as a 2 disc set it might help. because then you could just pop one out and keep going.
loved the dragonball z fight at the end. and the cliche gritty marine dude in the mech who got his face worked was pretty kick ass too. as far as gritty marine stereotypes are

is the guy -- I really liked his characterization because it brought a little "fire in the belly" energy to a cast of characters who tended to be a little too Zen-like in their approach to the battle.
