Republican Ass properly kicked in Northern Michigan
Locally, the political controversy surrounding the Michael Moore sponsored Traverse City Film Festival, and the Republican “alternate” Traverse Bay Freedom FilmFest was hot. Genie Aldrich and Cheryl Rhoads went to the radio and press with claims that Moore’s festival was anti-family, anti-faith, and anti-American. Evidently, their message of fear and hate fell on deaf ears, and the disconnect occurred between the Republicans and the public. Maybe the public is getting tired of the same old Republican tirade of moral supremacy. Here is the story in USA today:

http://www.usatoday.com/life/movies/news/2005-08-01-moo...

<snip>

By all accounts it was an overwhelming success," Moore said Monday. "It was a movie junkie's paradise." About 20,000 tickets were sold for the indoor showings. Moore estimated total festival attendance — when the outdoor movies and panels were added — at 50,000.

Not everyone was pleased. Genie Aldrich, a local conservative activist, and a Dallas-based group organized a shorter rival festival with movies they said conveyed "pro-America, pro-family" themes. One of them, Michael Moore Hates America, was cut off after about 10 minutes because it contained profane language.

Aldrich acknowledged crowds were sparse, with only 20-40 people attending some movies, although she said several hundred were on hand for the opening night. "It's not about a body count. It's about the message, and our message has reverberated around the world," she said, adding that the Traverse Bay Freedom FilmFest would return next year. "They've awakened a sleeping giant. Michael Moore should be feeling like Custer at Little Big Horn."

Moore said Aldrich's festival had flopped. "Virtually no one showed up," he said. "It was a victory for the art of cinema over those who have a hate-filled agenda."

1. "It's not about a body count..."
yeah...right....

It's about the fact that there were only about 20-30 people willing to swallow the kool-aid!

6. The best part is this
Genie Aldrich's co-founder is Cheryl Rhoads. She is a "Celebrity Advisor" for the Parents Television Council.

A congressional hearing revealed that there were 240,000 (no shit) indecency complaints to the FCC in 2003 and Mediaweek estimates that 99.8% (again no shit) of all these complaints were filed by or through the PTC.

So, we essentially have the PTC (conservative censorship organization)showing durty movies to families for free.

All their movies were free, and they even advertised free food. Still nobody showed.

5. Custer? Little Big Horn?
A smattering of people in attendance as opposed to 50,000 at Moore's event? Does this guy live in a parallel universe?

And will I ever stop asking rhetorical questions?

10. They offered Free movies, and Free Food.
I believe all of their movies were free, and they were within walking distance (2 blocks) of the other film festival.

At some of their venue's they offered free food. They also had a dress code.

You know Republicans and Social Programs. "No free food will be distributed to those who cannot meet the dress code"

I swear I am not making this stuff up. It was crazy as hell.

12. What a delicious shipwreck. I kind of want to go next year. Seems
more surreal than Michael Moore's gig, less predictable. Bet it would be fun to get wasted and go to it.

15. Well, mark it on the calender for next summer.
I am sure you would have fun here. There was lots of political talk on the streets, great movies, and a buzz from the film fest throughout the town.

The police department hauls lots of people to jail for drinking and driving here so it is best to play it safe. If you stay downtown at the Park Place Hotel, then everything is within a couple blocks. The 4 film venue's, fun bars, fantastic restaurants, and a free shuttle service from film to film.

Hope you can make it.

14. Hey guys, I got an idea for next year...
Let's all go to the Freeper Film Fest.

We'll go in dressed in accordance with their dress code, eat up their free food, drink up their free beverages, put on our DU hats, and leave.

16. "It's not about a body count"...
...indeed, how many people want to see a movie is completely irrelevant. In fact, the fewer the people interested in seeing it, the greater the chance that a major distributor will want to pick it up for wide national release. Anyone who knows a little about Hollywood wheeling and dealing knows that.

This guy is the one on the money, unlike the granola and Birkenstock wearing hippie Michael Moore, who obviously knows nothing about how the movie business really works.

18. Well, as you know
those fuckers are not the brightest candle in the window. They get through life crashing into everything else, and then spinning the story so they are either the hero or the victim.

I think it is hilarious. Especially since their co-founder was a celebrity adviser for the Parents Television Council. If you are unfamiliar with them, they are the ones who flood the FCC with indecency complaints.

The so-called guardians of public decency grossed out the audience after 10 minutes. Genie Aldrich went running to the stage shouting CUT CUT CUT!

Oh the humanity ! Little ears were listening ! I was mortified !
