'Chappelle's Show' Actor Says Series Is Over
Edited on Wed Aug-03-05 05:56 PM by Placebo

Time to face the facts: Dave Chappelle's hit Comedy Central series isn't coming back, says one of its stars. "`Chappelle's Show' is over, man. Done," comic Charlie Murphy told TV Guide. "It took me a long time to be able to say those words, but I can say it pretty easy now, because it's the truth."

Chappelle's sudden "spiritual retreat" to South Africa on the eve of his show's third season has left the series in limbo since May. About half of a new season had been filmed before Chappelle left, Murphy said.

"I'm disappointed it ended the way it did, but I'm not angry with anybody," he said. "`Chappelle's Show' was like the Tupac of TV shows. It came out, it got everybody's attention, it was a bright shining star, but it burned out and for some strange reason, it burned out quick."

Comedy Central has always said the door is open for Chappelle to return, spokeswoman Aileen Budow said Wednesday.

3. I support that decision
Better to let Dave Chappelle decide when to end it.

I'd rather the two seasons stand as they are, than to have a third season just because it's in the contract.

If the muse has left the building I trust Dave Chappelle's artistic right to pull the plug on the show that bears his name.

What do you mean by:

 BOOOOO-HOO HOOOOOO!!! NOT

just curious.

19. I agree. Comedy Central has long been a source of stress
to Dave and his pal(show producer). Good for him for following his heart.

7. Great idea! But give Paul Mooney a show first!

Mooney as Negrodamus:

question: Negrodamus, why is President Bush so sure Saddam has WMD?

answer: because he has the receipt!

9. Negrodamus is already getting his own show!
I heard that Comedy Central is already giving him his own show but I havent heard much beyond that.

"White people like Wayne Brady because he makes Bryant Gumble look like Malcolm X."

10. I love Paul Mooney's humor.
But I think he's not a very good comedic actor.

I'd rather see him in a supporting role in a Charlie Murphy show.

26. TOTALLY!
that guy is great!

hell, they could do the Chapelle show without Dave and I bet it would be better than 90% of the crap on comedy central!

....no offense to dave of course...

Personally, I think he quit cuz I bet the execs at comedy central wanted to keep a tight leash on him no matter what the papers say.

Maybe there will be a tell-all book?

I love Charlie's True Hollywood Stories! In fact, I know a couple independent witnesses who can corroborate Prince's basketball skillz-- even when he's wearing heels!

Go Charlie!!!

Truly bad news. I will miss his show.
The man is a true genius.
Oh well, I can still view repeats of "Black Bush" when I feel blue...

6. Damn it to hell!
Chappelle's Show is the funniest show on TV currently. That would suck if Dave decided to end it.

*goes home and watches DVD sets repeatedly*

11. Good for him. For Dave
People say I'm crazy doing what I'm doing,
Well they give me all kinds of warnings to save me from ruin,
When I say that I'm o.k. they look at me kind of strange,
Surely your not happy now you no longer play the game,

People say I'm lazy dreaming my life away,
Well they give me all kinds of advice designed to enlighten me,
When I tell that I'm doing Fine watching shadows on the wall,
Don't you miss the big time boy you're no longer on the ball?

I'm just sitting here watching the wheels go round and round,
I really love to watch them roll,
No longer riding on the merry-go-round,
I just had to let it go,

People asking questions lost in confusion,
Well I tell them there's no problem,
Only solutions,
Well they shake their heads and they look at me as if I've lost my mind,
I tell them there's no hurry...
I'm just sitting here doing time,

I'm just sitting here watching the wheels go round and round,
I really love to watch them roll,
No longer riding on the merry-go-round,
I just had to let it go.

18. Perfect for Dave...thanks for posting this.

I feel so badly for Chappelle. Comedy Central didn't appreciate him or what he did, and treated him poorly. They didn't respect his art.

I'm glad he is doing what he feels is best for him, his family and his voice as an artist. I'm sure his stand up routines will be in great demand now.

16. I seriously considered getting cable because of /Chappelle's Show/.
I haven't had it for ten years! People just kept talking about it; it's been a long time since a show has done that that I've seen.

23. That really sucks.
I always hoped he'd quit while he was ahead (wouldn't want to see a good thing get long in the tooth), but this is ridiculous. At least he did it on his own terms. Thanks for the laughs, Dave.

24. Damn! No cable, and just discovered Chappelle on DVD.
Edited on Thu Aug-04-05 08:23 AM by Patiod
My SO has been doing the "Playa Haters Ball" skit almost non-stop. He'll pick me up at the train station, and instead of saying "how was work?" he'll say "Buc Nasty, what can be said about that suit that hasn't already been said about afghanistan...it looks bombed out and depleated.."

This news sucks, but at least we had 2 1/2 seasons. I hated the scatological stuff, but Charlie Murphy's True Hollywood Stories, The Player Hater's Ball, I Know Black People, The Wayne Brady stuff ("Is Wayne Brady gonna hafta choke a bitch?") was genius.

Reading between the lines of this article, it sounds like Dave has "found religion", and that's contributing to his reluctance to continue doing the show.

This is Chappelle's second trip to South Africa. He first came to Durban, and visited Salim, in 2000. Chappelle won't tell me exactly how he met Salim but describes him as a family friend. A soft-spoken Muslim, Salim seems also to be something of a sounding board to Chappelle, who converted to Islam several years ago. While Chappelle is not doing a formal religious course in Durban, says Salim, who wore a simple cotton robe and hung back through the interview and photo shoot and only spoke when I asked him a question, "if he wants to talk religion then I'm there as someone to talk to."
