Grilling is done quickly over a hot flame (hamburgers, steak). BBQ is done slowly, several hours, with lower temperatures (ribs)

Maybe 20 minutes to go, slather on your BBQ sauce. That way it doesn't get burned. Some people serve the sauce on the side so you can put it on if you want
I prefer my ribs with no sauce. I use a dry spice rub that I spread on before cooking. I do this with chicken too. The spice rub and cooking over hickory wood gives me plenty of flavor.
