Favorite bluegrass/ traditional country/ country-folk/ Americana number?
I think I covered every possible description of this category; suffice it to say that I'm talking about any kind of country music that isn't corporate Nashville neo-Eagles bilge. Define it however you like. As ever, I'm going with "Little Matty Groves" as performed by Norman & Nancy Blake. Sample here: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B000000DSN/002-2313136-6745654?v=glance
And you?

Edited on Thu Aug-04-05 06:43 AM by ET Awful
Off the top of my head, "Shady Grove" and "Drifting Too Far From The Shore" are the first ones that come to mind.

I'm not a religous person, but I really dig old spirituals and gospels and the like :)

Out on the perilous deep
Where dangers silently creep
And storms so violently sweep
You're drifting too far from the shore

Drifting too far from the shore
Drifting too far from that peaceful shore
Come to Jesus today, let him show you the way
You're drifting too far from the shore

Today the tempest rolls high
And clouds overshadow the sky
Sure death is hovering nigh
You're drifting too far from the shore

Drifting too far from the shore
Drifting too far from that peaceful shore
Come to Jesus today, let him show you the way
You're drifting too far from the shore

18. whoops, almost forgot:
Let it rain, let it pour,
Let it rain a whole lot more,
'Cause I got them deep river blues.
Let the rain drive right on,
Let the waves sweep along,
'Cause I got them deep river blues.

My old gal's a good old pal,
And she looks like a water fowl,
When I get them deep river blues.
Ain't no one to cry for me,
And the fish all go out on a spree
When I get them deep river blues.

Give me back my old boat,
I'm gonna sail if she'll float,
'Cause I got them deep river blues,
I'm goin' back to Muscle Shoals,
Times are better there I'm told,
Cause I got them deep river blues.

Let it rain, let it pour,
Let it rain a whole lot more,
'Cause I got them deep river blues,
Let the rain drive right on,
Let the waves sweep along,
'Cause I got them deep river blues.

If my boat sinks with me.
I'll go down, don't you see,
'Cause I got them deep river blues,
Now I'm gonna say goodbye,
And if I sink, just let me die,
'Cause I got them deep river blues.

Let it rain, let it pour,
Let it rain a whole lot more,
'Cause I got them deep river blues,
Let the rain drive right on,
Let the waves sweep along,
'Cause I got them deep river blues.

Deep River Blues

The other night when I come in,
so drunk I couldn't see.
I hooked my toe in the old doormat
and fell as flat as I could be

I had me a little old bottle o' booze
(and I didn't have no more)
When I fell down - the cork flew outta the bottle
(Plop!-glug glug glug....hic) - 'n spilled it

There's a little old rat in his hidin' place,
he got that whiskey scent.
He slipped right up 'n he got him a sssshrlp,
'n back to his hole he went

Says back to his hole he went,
back to his hole he went.
He slipped right up 'n he got him a sssshrlp
(he's drinkin' it all)
'n back to his hole he went

He slipped right up to my puddle o' gin
and he lapped up more and more
He says "Doggone, my red-eyed soul,
I'm a-gonna get drunk once more"

"I gonna get drunk once more,
I'm a-gonna get drunk once more
He says "Doggone, my red-eyed soul,
I'm a-gonna get drunk once more"

He washed his face with his front paws
and on his hind leg he sat
And he's a-gettin' pretty high
when he winked one eye and he says
"(hic)Hey, where's that old tom-cat?"

"Now where's that old tom-cat?
I said where's that old tom-cat?
He's a-gettin' high when he winked one eye and he says
"(hic) Hey, buddy, where's that old tom-cat?
(I can lick him and his brother)"

The old tom-cat come a-slippin' in,
dashed over to the middle o' the floor
The cat jumped over and the rat got sober
and he never got drunk no more

He didn' get drunk no more,
no he never got drunk no more.
The cat jumped over and the rat got sober
(poor little feller)
and he never got dunk no more

intoxicated rat ~

14. I liked the Seldom Scene from the 70's early 80's
Edited on Thu Aug-04-05 07:16 AM by demnan
Almost everything they did was excellent. I don't know if they are known by many outside the D.C. area - they were a particularly local group here. They were sort of a break off group from the Country Gentlemen, another excellent D.C. bluegrass group. We had a lot of fine ones here back then sort of the local "scene".

Norman Blake's stuff, like the Last train from Coal Valley.

Also Emmalou Harris has done fine work for a very long time in this field.

I think it really got going with the Byrds' Sweetheart of the Rodeo album. I know I'm showing my age here.

I've got to edit and add that I adore the Dixie Chicks and have all their albums.

20. now, this is a country western band
Edited on Thu Aug-04-05 08:00 AM by cleofus1

Patsy Montana (1908-1996), born Ruby Blevins in Hope, Arkansas, came to WLS in 1933. Within a year after the photo below was taken, Patsy and the Prairie Ramblers recorded "I Want to be a Cowboy's Sweetheart." The song, which Patsy wrote, became the first record by a female country artist to sell a million copies.

24. That's a tough call
I love so much of that stuff. I have some good collections of some really old stuff. If you don't have any, get some of the Lomax recordings. That stuff is amazing.
Another suggestion is the DVD set of "American Roots Music". I believe it was made for PBS. It is a great documentary on American music through the years.
I also like country music that is put out today, but not the CMT stuff. I like the more folk style that comes out of places like Austin. There is still some good Americana music being produced out there.
I really can't mention just one or two performances that I like.

that he's very popular with the frat boy/ future frat boy (it was a 17-and-older show) crowd. I don't know how you do that without any radio play, but songs like "The Road Goes On Forever" have to help.

43. "Windfall"- Son Volt
Edited on Fri Aug-05-05 02:26 AM by enigmatic
Jay Farrar is a genius, and this song is a classic:

Now and then it keeps you running
It never seems to die
The trail's spent with fear
Not enough living on the outside

Never seem to get far enough
Staying in between the lines
Hold on to what you can
Waiting for the end
Not knowing when

May the wind take your troubles away
May the wind take your troubles away
Both feet on the floor, two hands on the wheel,
May the wind take your troubles away

Trying to make it far enough, to the next time zone
Few and far between past the midnight hour
Never feel alone, you're really not alone...

Switching it over to AM
Searching for a truer sound
Can't recall the call letters
Steel guitar and settle down
Catching an all-night station somewhere in Louisiana
It sounds like 1963, but for now it sounds like heaven

May the wind take your troubles away
May the wind take your troubles away
Both feet on the floor, two hands on the wheel,
May the wind take your troubles away...
