Want to watch the Freepers re-fight the Civil War?
Edited on Thu Aug-04-05 12:25 PM by Modem Butterfly
It all began simply enough, with an article about the birthplace of General Sherman.

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1456633/posts

And they're off!

Sherman did not have pillage the South as he did .
I think he gave the Nazi's the idea for their Blitzkrieg.
Totally unacceptable.

Are you comparing an American general instrumental in ending the Civil War, which the South started, with the Nazis?

We need more men like William T. Sherman in our war against the Islamics. The South brought it on themselves, and should consider themselves lucky that they didn't have to face General Clemenza.

It's a real shame the CSA didn't have M-16's

One side in the Civil War was virtually the only democracy in the world at that time; and the other was a slave empire conspiring with foreign dictators in an attempt to destroy that democracy.

And which is it you call a "tyrannical government?"

The founding fathers knew that they were committing treason in the eyes of the crown, and were prepared to suffer the consequences. Southerners knew that they were committing treason to the Union, yet too many of their descendents still whine about how they were treated, which was considerably better than other folks in other domestic conflicts around the world

You say he only brought the war to the rich folks of the south. The only problem is all the poor folks he raped and pillaged on his way to those "rich" folks. Alot of poor people starved to death because of this MONSTER!

"Sherman was one of America's greatest Generals, a man of Honor just as much as Lee. Because of his "pillage"; hundreds of thousands of lives were spared."
Well, obviously thos innocent men, women and children that were killed or starved, their homes burned to the ground, their property stolen, their crops and livestock destroyed, obviously they weren't you ancestors. Sherman <*SPIT*> was a war criminal - he admitted that his actions condemned him as such.

And attempts to legitimize such actions only empower terrorists, who see our families - yours and mine - a legitimate targets. And anyone agreeing that innocents are legitimate targets shares the beliefs of Islamic terrorists.

Sherman was absolutely correct in his strategy and tactics.
Treason deserved no less. It is just unfortunate that the old ruling class of the South was not completely crushed for the death and destruction it visited upon the Nation and especially the South. There was NOTHING noble about the Lost Cause.

"If you want proof just visit ANY grave yard along the DRUNKS march to the sea. My family lost almost all of the men and great many children."
All starved to death, huh? Doesn't say much for your fellow Georgians, does it? I've read accounts of houses burned, farms foraged for food, railroads torn up. I've even read all those exaggerated acounts of women being raped. But I've never read anything about widespread starvation, or even localized starvation. So if all those relatives of yours starved to death then their neighbors should have helped them. They apparently had food.

11. Those people are messed-up
I read two pages of the thread before my eyes glazed-over and I began to feel sick.

It doesn't surprise me that some hard right-wingers hold sympathies for the CSA but I'm surprised that the FR tolerate it openly nonetheless.

5. Some of them actually seem to have some brain cells left
Not all of them, mind you; but some of them are calling "bullshit" to the worship of the CSA.

My guess is that they won't be around very long.

12. Wow, some intelligent Freeper comments!
I'm not going to start a flame war here saying which comments I agree with, but you're talking to a girl who got mad when they played "Dixie" at fireworks last month, and wrote and email to the sponsor suggesting that "Battle Hymn of the Republic" would be more appropriate in Our True-Blue Union City.

14. As a born and raised Southerner, I can safely say...
...that anyone, from the North or South, who attempts to morally justify what the CSA did is an idiot and most likely a closet racist.

As far as I'm concerned, southerners need to treat the American civil war the same way that present-day Germans treat WWII - our ancestors did horrible things, things that we are certainly not proud of, and for their actions and for the continuing consequences of their actions we are sorry.

17. I'm from the west coast originally, been here for the last few years
My partner was born and raised in Alabama, though.

Once, we got confronted by a flagger who thought my partner would sign his petition to bring back the battle emblem to the Georgia flag. My partner said that he fought for his country in the last Gulf war and would never do anything to support those who had tried to destroy it. The flagger was very surprised and said that his relatives had fought for Georgia during the Civil War and my partner said, "You are a very brave man. If a member of my family had participated in an act of treason I'd be too embarassed to tell people,"
