Who can debunk this urban legend?
I'm a writer, and sometimes I pick up on what people around me are saying without really thinking. Sometimes, you catch some pretty interesting stuff. I heard this just now from the guy across from me on the #128 bus coming home from work.
Seems he knew a guy from New Westminster who went to Saskatchewan and bought a clapped-out old Harley frame for a hundred bucks. The stuff came in a cardboard box that had been sitting god knows where for years. Guy takes it home to New West and calls Harley Canada to give them the serial number, thinking about restoring it. About a week later, the local Harley Canada manager calls him to say he'd like to buy the bike for five grand. Our man asks why? Manager replies that it's a vintage bike. Our man says no.
Some time later the President of Harley Canada calls up, offering to buy the bike for ten grand. Our man asks why? Apparently its a vintage bike with a history. Our guy says thanks, but no thanks.
More time passes, then another phone call. This time it's Jay Leno. Jay says he'll give our man a quarter-million US for the bike. Our guy wants to know if it's really Jay Leno. Leno tells him to watch the show on Friday. Friday comes and our man's watching the show. Sure enough JL mentions our man in BC and says he wants the bike.
Our man sells, but his interest is piqued. After a while he calls Leno to ask why the bike is so valuable. Jay asks if he looked under the seat much. Our man says no. Leno reads him the inscription under the saddle.
"To Elvis. Happy Birthday with Love, Priscilla."

This has to be total baloney. I'm willing to bet there's someone on DU right now that has heard this story about a guy from Pittsburgh or Topeka, right?

8. Snopes does have this myth listed as false.
Including this quote from Leno himself.
"Yesterday, I got a call that it was an old farmer in Pennsylvania that had it," he said. "Then, two weeks ago, Texas Monthly magazine called because I'd bought it from a farmer (there)."

Leno has one thing to say: "I don't buy show-business memorabilia."

5. Just guessing but >
Elvis and Prissy don't strike me as the kind who'd scribe their affections discretely under a saddle...

Actually, that story was on some odd child TV program. I don't know if it was true or not.

And, oh yes, he inherited it from a grandfather or an uncle... or something. It had been stored in a barn for a very long time.
