Ok, I'm sorry, but what about a large unattended dog in a populated area?

Ok, I'm sorry, but what about a large unattended dog in a populated area?
Edited on Thu Aug-04-05 08:30 PM by JanMichael
Just asking. Look there's a big assed, big frame, mixed dog that's been left unattended to do it's "thing" in my apartment complex common area, ussually at night when it gets pretty damned dark and the landscaping makes things difficult to see. I should add it hasn't been "left" it wanders over from across the street, I don't know who owns it because it goes into an unfenced backyard are shared by dozens of single family houses, mostly rentals.

People like myself walk our dogs on a leash and, yes I know it sounds gross to numbskulls, don't leave their shit on the ground. Some of us, like myself, have small dogs that we'd really rather not have to pull out of Cujo's jaws OR step in it's abnormally large pile of shit.

Shall I simply turn the big mutt in because of his idiot fuckwit owner or just shoot it (Edit: I'm NOT shooting IT. That's only for EFFECT!)?

The drawback to shooting it is that it really isn't the dog's fault that owner is a dimwit that lets it roam unattended in a highly populated urban neighborhood. Also I like animals and shooting one would suck. Plus I'd be discharging a firearm in a populated are which is twice as stupid as letting the dog roam unattended. So it's highly improbable that I'd have the stomach to do it anyway AND I don't get to have bullets as Steph (Thtwudbeme) thinks I'm reckless (Different thread/story) and won't let me keep ammo in the home.

So my only options are to either ignore the dog and let what happens happen or call animal control. To let it go risks several things. One of which is probably nothing. But there's a shitload of traffic in the area where the dog roams so a car may be it's end which would suck too, it isn't fair to the dog! It may be plenty nice and cuddly with it's owner/s so damned if I'd like that either. Also it may, may, attack another dg, like ours, and then some real shit would go down. In that case, and other case, the dog would probably be put to sleep if the owners were stupid enough to not tag it, which I imagine they are, that would suck too.

So what's your advice?

1. Call the ASPCA or animal control
... or adopt the dog.

... or do nothing and wait for someone else to do something.

2. The cat, the small dog, and the small apartment, make adoption impossible.
I know the answer is calling someone to pick it up. Hadn't considered the SPCA, that's a good option.

4. shoot it
in yr circumstance i call animal control, shooting it is illegal in my hood, not shooting it led to a child being mauled and yrs of guilt because i didn't report it

large dogs should not be roaming unattended

if someone is badly hurt, you will always feel bad

report it, keep on it if they don't show up to remove it

i no longer let it slide, i report it

7. I've sort of settled on calling animal control.
However another poster mentioned the SPCA so perhaps I'll look them up or maybe some other non-lethal gruop.

I really hate sending a dog to the pound...That said I'm not up for feeling guilty if/when it gets spooked and attacks another dog or a child.

17. If you find out who the owner is
you may get animal control officers to just go and have a 'chat' with them. But don't be surprised if the dog ends up being tied up in the yard 24/7.

Sorry... I just don't see what's so difficult about it, the dog is in danger to himself and others... call animal control... No big deal.

15. Okay.
Waiting for the call.

In case the call is about animal-removal... I charge by the hour and how many stitches I receive from being mauled. :D

13. If it's a nuisance or in danger
Call animal control. We live in a town that has laws that dogs can't even be left in yards without having an access to shelter or brought indoors in bad weather. People take leash laws VERY seriously here. So when we see a roaming dog, the immediate concern is that the dog got out and is going to get hit by a car. So we call animal control. I had never been accustomed to this level of care of animals in a town, seemed a bit intrusive at first. But it's great once you get used to it, lots of dogs, all very well taken care of.

16. Here's how I solve it.
I follow it. Maybe ask some kids whose dog it is. Then when I find dogshit, any dogshit, I take it to their house and leave it next to their door. With a note.
"This is something your dog left at our place. I brought some other shit with it, because I thought you should know what its like to pick up other peoples' dogs' shit, since we pick your dog's shit up all the time." Then jes' keep brangin' it, until you see an improvement.
In the case of a condo, I found out where the rude cow parked her car and dropped dog shit next to the driver's side door. But can you believe it? It took 2 visits from animal control and her dog being run over and killed (while she was inside, sitting on her lazy ass), to get her dog to quit crossing the street to shit in my garden

You have my sympathies.
