Baby Elephant Dies After Pool Mishap
This is SO upsetting and sad. :-( :-( The little guy was incredibly cute and I was looking forward to seeing him next week. I am completely sick of bad news.

Last Update: 8/4/2005 9:34:43 PM

The Rosamond Gifford Zoo’s newest edition, Kedar the baby elephant, died at 6:15 Thursday evening.

Kedar was trying to get into the swimming pool in the elephant area earlier today. Kirina and Mali, two adult elephants who are vying to be Kedar’s aunt, were trying to keep the baby elephant out.

But suddenly Kedar darted between Kirina’s legs, and went into the pool.

Kirina and Mali went in the water to save Kedar, but inadvertently pushed Kedar into 8 to 10 foot deep water.

Zoo workers had to go into the water and push Kedar to the shallow end so he could get out.

Kedar was exhausted from the incident, and had been resting all day at the zoo. He died at 6:15 PM. Zoo workers believe he probably got some water in his lungs.

3. The whole family unit
goes through a grieving process I've read. I can only imagine the mother's feelings. This weekend was to be the Elephant Extravaganza in honor of Kedar and hundreds turned out for his big debut. Its just heartbreaking.

2. Oh, that poor baby. That's too short a life for such a wonderful creature
That's amazing how the other elephants were trying to save him.

OT, but it makes you wonder how in the hell the Republicans think they deserve to have an elephant as a mascot.

8. Oh, yes.
I think that's why they wanted to hang on to the elephant here at the Alaska zoo so badly. Buttheads.

At least they bought her a treadmill. :eyes:

4. I considered the
fact that this may not be considered big news to some, but around where I live the elephant program at the zoo is frontpage news. I thought it might provoke some thought to endangered species programs at zoos around the country and world and possibly ways to improve them. I would have preferred to have this posted in the animal rights forum, but seeing that I haven't donated in a while (strapped for cash) I am unable to do so. I guess I'm kinda offended this was moved from LBN to the lounge that I do not post in. Oh well, back to browsing for me I guess.

5. Why did I expect this to be about the Lincoln Park Zoo?

6. Oh, poor little guy...
That is such a sin. I'm sure the two "aunts" are very sad. If anyone has read "When Elephants Weep", you'll understand. Poor little tyke - may he rest in peace
