Are there any cats out there that don't like catnip?
the cat I am taking care of just ignored it. I bought her a toy where I can put catnip essence on it. She sniffed at it and walked away. :wtf:

So are there any other cats out there who don't go crazy over catnip or do I have a strange cat at home?

1. This cat
does _not_ like catnip. But he absolutely _loves_ paintbrushes. The more expensive the paintbrushes, the better he likes them. :eyes:

damn paint brush... what is so special about you! you don't deserve HALF of the attention she gives you! and Siamese... watch out, real jealous types they are.

9. Ginger has radar
for things that are mine: my paintbrushes, my moccasins, my new red leather chair, my side of the bed . . . He's the king.

(But he's not _really_ Siamese. His mom is grey and white, and his dad was a black and white feral cat who lived in the woods near our house. )

12. upon further inspection, I see he's faux siamese.
I just saw his coloration and assumed. But mutts are the best, especially strays and rescues! We have no idea what our cats' lineages are but they are royalty none the less.

are lovely . . . and I especially love the orange in Tennyson's coat. You're lucky have been adopted by them. ;)

3. Even my asthmatic cat loves it.
She has asthma so bad she has trouble smelling food even, but she loves it.

On the other hand,
If my memory serves correct, I read somewhere that some cats don't seem interested in it, so it may not be that unusual.

5. funny, but none of my solid black cats have ever been affected by catnip
so I'd give it to my friends and their cats would go apeshit over it; go figure

7. I've heard the same thing about some cats....
...it seems some like it and some could care less. With my cats, I'm not sure if they like the catnip, or the toys themselves.

And I see (top photo) that he has one of those "cat toys from hell," very much like the one my mom sent Ginger for Christmas last year. ;)

18. Only 50% of all cats are affected by Cat Nip and then that's only adults
If your cat is still a kitten then you've just wasted moneny on it. Usually it takes until they are a year old that the catnip gene kicks in.

Abbott will get slightly affected by catnip but Evita likes it but doesn't really act any different with it

19. its an adult cat
I am going to give it to my aunt's cats. They go crazy over it. It was worth a try with Vicky. Thought if she plays with it she wouldn't feel so alone during the day. She gets back with her family Sunday.

20. it's genetic
2 of our cats like the stuff - they eat it, the third cat will sniff and rub against it, and the 4th ignores it

http://chemistry.about.com/library/weekly/aa103001a.htm
Domestic and many wild cats (including cougars, bobcats, lions, and lynx) respond to the nepetalactone in catnip. However, not all cats react to catnip. The behavior is inherited as an autosomal dominant gene; 10-30% of domestic cats in a population may be unresponsive to nepetalactone. Kittens will not show the behavior until they are at least 6-8 weeks old. In fact, catnip produces an avoidance response in young kittens. The catnip response usually develops by the time a kitten is 3 months old.

They were freaking out and appeared to be actually tripping.

They don't need anything to get them "up" or be more sociable

32. My cats are stoners, sorry.
One's an 'eating' stoner. The guy that eats EVERYTHING.
The other is paranoid. He seems to accuse us all of being narcs and planting bugs in his ear, I swear he does!

33. My old cat (RIP) never had any use for catnip
She would maybe sniff it with the attitude of, "That's mildy interesting." And then never pay any further attention to it.
