My mother doesn't want to see Mystic River
Edited on Fri Nov-07-03 10:56 PM by L.A.dweller
because she says the actors don't support the troops. I know they are anti-war but I don't believe that they are anti-military troops.
What should I say to her in regards to her point of view?

Update on status of our movie going plans:
My mother has decided to see this movie with us but not because I have changed her mind. She is seeing it for the sake of a harmonious evening with her family. I am still going to bring as much of your guys info as I can to her. Thank you.

1. Didn't Sean visit the troops?
I didn't think he said that until after/during his visit. So, you can't say that he doesn't support the troops.

2. Being pro-war is being blatantly anti-troop these days.
There's nothing patriotic losing your life for something besides your country.

4. Just explain that you are disappointed that she cannot tell...
...the difference between disagreeing with the reason our troops were put in harms way and actually supporting the troops. Tell her that you are against the war also, but that doesn't mean you are against our troops who are doing their duty.

24. When i went to the anti-war protests she got upset
and assumed i was against the troops for some reason. I'm like wtf, i have a brother in the army why would i be against the troops? One reason that i am going to the protests is so that maybe i have a chance at preventing him from going to Iraq.

5. They supported the troops.they didn't want them to go to war
and we would not have all these dead troops if we didn't invade the country.

6. Ask your mother if Bush's cutting veteran's benefits by...
Edited on Fri Nov-07-03 10:37 PM by NightTrain
...$870 million constitutes supporting the troops. Or if the Pentagon's piss-poor level of support--to a point at which the soldiers in Iraq actually have to purchase some of their own gear--constitutes supporting the troops. Ask your mother how blind allegiance to the government no matter what it says or does constitutes supporting the troops.

With any luck, your mother will realize that the so-called Hollywood "elites" support the troops far more than the Bush Junta does!

11. Ironic thing is she's got a son
in the damn military. My family doesn't want him called on to go overseas.
I don't know where she got this idea to not see this movie 'cause she watches both Fox news and listens to talk radio. I'm going with my other sister and her 10 yr old son. I'm going to see Mystic River and they are going to suffer through "Elf," unless I can get them to change her mind.

going on. The site responsible was in another Lounge thread today, as a matter of fact. I wonder if your mother somehow heard the memo.

7. Can't they still tell a good story? Plus, they got their $$ already.
First, they're already paid for the film. So seeing it, or not, won't affect them in that regard (plus, it's also well reviewed, so they will work again).

But more importantly, whatever do their feelings on the troops (I won't go into the correctness of your mom's feelings, I'm sure you have) have to do with their ability to tell a good story?

Does your mom want to see a good movie, or does she want to feel self-righteous? On the flipside, does she patronize every one of Bruce Willis' and Arnie Schwarzenegger's movies?

8. tell her to stop listening to Rush
if supporting the troops means getting them j=killed, then tell her by all means to boycott those commies Tim RObbins and Sean Penn, who want to see our boys come home in one piece.

10. Amen to that, everyone!
I'm glad I registered at this website! I totally agree with everyone here! It's sad that in these dark times, and you're against a war, you are also against the soldiers. That's total BS. Have I ever mentioned to you guys how much I hate the right-wing????

30. The Wolfram & Hart angle this year...
is pretty trippy. It's far from the way the show first started. I'm interested to see where it's going to go. And the inclusion of Spike makes the show much more interesting (and entertaining as well).

17. We can help you expand your vocabulary....
....so that you no longer have to simply hate the right wing.

I loathe the right wing. I hold them in utter contempt. They are anathema to me. I curse, despise, detest, shun, spit upon, spurn, recoil from, and abhor the right wing.

And that's just when I am feeling a bit generous toward them.

16. Tell her...
Edited on Fri Nov-07-03 10:48 PM by onebigbadwulf
there is NO ONE in America who DOESN"T support the troops.

We've sent care packages to troops while protesting the war outside town hall. They have nothing to do with each other.

Saying someone doesn't support the troops is like saying someone doesn't support breathing, or doesn't support water. It makes no sense.

"What you're protesting polluted water?! You don't support the water! Traitor!"
