The program director of KRLA Radio in L.A. wants me to send him a tape |
|
Imagine my surprise when I got home from work this evening, only to find this e-mail waiting for me:
I'd like to hear a sample hour of one of your shows. Can you send me one? xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx, CRMC Director of Long Form Programming Salem Communications Los Angeles KKLA/KRLA/KRLH/KXMX/KFSH Radio xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Glendale, CA 91203 So I went to the websites for the five stations listed above. The two FMs have gospel/religious formats, two of the AMs are news/talk, and the third AM broadcasts multicultural programing in several different languages.
Which makes me wonder why this guy is interested in hearing a sample hour of my college radio show, which features lesser-known soul music of the '60s and '70s?
Ah, what the hell. I'll send the guy a tape and see what he says. Who knows, maybe he's just nostalgic for the music he grew up with!

2. He probably has no idea that I'm a DUer! |
|
But judging from the list of talk shows they carry on KRLA (Michael Savage, Laura Ingraham, Mike Medved), I figured they wouldn't exactly be sympathetic to progressive causes! :-)

For many years KRLA was the best "oldies' station in LA..playing mainly 50s and early 60s rock'n'roll, soul, R&B, do-wop and cruising music. It's an AM station, and slowly lost its mainstream audience to K-EARTH, an Infinity oldies station with the most limited playlist you can imagine.
Latinos continued to listen to KRLA..some of the ads ran in Spanish.... especially to "Huggy Boy" in the morning and a dedication show at night. (Personal experience: as late as 1995, some junior high kids who could have been the grandchildren of orignal Latino fans would answer the question "what music do you listen to" by saying "oldies!" meaning "Angel Baby," "Duke of Earl" and "I Only Have Eyes for You" etc on KRLA
I also once heard Paul Rodriguez come on Huggy Boy's morning show and say..Are you really Huggy Boy? Man, I thought you were dead! (The DJ was about 75 at the time and had been on the air for decades.)
I don't know why the station might want to hear tapes of music shows, maybe they are considering going back to a very cool format.

When KRLA was a music station, it was located at 1110 AM on the dial. There were a bunch of switches when the ownership changed. Here is a good link to its history; http://www.geocities.com/Hollywood/Academy/5515/krla.html
