San Francisco on a friday night...
I am at the YDA convention, spent a loooooooong day in meetings talking about our platform... it will be a late night. I will need a damn good beer. Where does a young progressive cut loose, drink, and meet cool people around the nob hill area?

1. Leave Nob Hill

Walk out of your hotel, take a cab and tell him "Perry's on Union Street" (if you want to drink with rich yuppies) or to take you to the Haight (heavy punk drug scene). There are good clubs SoMa ("South of Market").

As a jazz lover, I used to love to go to the Great American Music Hall on O'Farrell.

If you want Old San Francisco, I'd say try Enrico's on Broadway. Sandwiched between strip clubs, it's the best sidewalk cafe in SF, and GREAT short-order Italian food.

Pity Henry Afrika's closed in the late 1980s.

Best Irish bar in SF: "Plough & Stars" on Clement. Don't even THINK about saying anything sympathetic to the Protties.

Is the Fog City Diner on the Embarcadero still there?

4. No.
Although SF isn't the latest town going. Things shut down pretty much after midnight.

Another suggestion: if you like piano jazz, the lobby bar in the Fairmont usually has a pretty good straight-ahead piano/bass/tenor trio. Drinks are expensive though.

3. If you want a worker owned, unionized strip club, go to Lusty Lady
I haven't been myself, I have sadly only been to SF once when I was about five, but I read about it in the San Francisco Bay Guardian and it sounds like an interesing place.
