22. Thanks Crazy. I loved this programme card.
I have this real thing about turn-of-the-Twentieth-century America. If I believed in reincarnation, I would be absolutely convinced that I'd been there before. Sousa may not be the world's greatest musician but his music - and I prefer his theatre music to his marches - is such an evocative soundtrack to the era that it always sends a shiver up my spine.

I did a Google search for Willow Grove Park and found some wonderful old photographs - amazing feeling longing and nostalgia for something that happened thousands of miles away half a century before I was born.

Writers are WEIRD!

3. Ewwww. That makes me sick. I fucking hate Sousa music.
Ugh.

:puke:

But I totally affirm your right to love his music, and, though I'm ready to otherwise censor and remove from the collective unconscious vast amounts of shitty musicians, I would never touch Sousa that way; as much as I hate his music, at least he was legit.

23. A quite Obscure one...
Wisconsin Forward Forever.

Written for Wiconsin Troops in WWI, It's interesting that he included a lot of very German polka-esque themes in it. Quite surprising, given the anit-Germnan sentiment at the time. (i.e. renaming sauerkraut "Liberty Cabbage)

18. I of only 3 people to have an instrument named after him
working from memory

The others being Adolphe Sax (saxophone), and Maurice Martinot (ondes-martinot).

Having said that now folk are going to throw up thousands of such people whom I've forgotten.
