So, I need suggestions for a movie to see this weekend
I try to treat myself most weekends...take myself out for ice cream and a movie. I'm reading through what's playing here and kind of at a loss. I'm leanin toward "The Island" but not really excited about anything at the moment. Anyone seen anything good lately (other than the penguin movie...I saw that last weekend)? Or should I just give up and go get ice cream and buy a book? :)

1. I just saw Cinderella Man. Excellent flick.
And I am reading Harry Potter.

4. Would you believe...
it's not playing anywhere near my end of town...and I have 2 or 3 big theaters fairly nearby.

6. I can dig it. I only go to the dollar theater here.
Never would I pay full price for a movie.

7. I tend to go to matinees...
unless it's something I really want to see and am really sure I'm going to like. It's what Saturday afternoons are for...a matinee movie and ice cream at Marble Slab. :)

It really is a terrific film.

2. If "The Beat that My Heart Skipped" is playing, you should go see that.
Above-average French movie about a real-estate scammer who decides that he wants to be a concert pianist. Interesting plot, good performances.

5. Not Ladder 49.
Cathyclysmic and I rented it last night so she could get her Joaquin Phoenix fix. Boring, formulaic and cliche.

9. I saw previews for that a while back...
and didn't have much interest. I'm not the biggest Joaquin fan...though I am looking forward to the Johnny Cash movie he's in.

26. I liked it
It was a good flick about Baltimore firemen. I love it when movies take place in Baltimore

It also featured the next (hopefully) governor of Maryland, Martin O'Malley (currently Mayor of Baltimore)

8. I'm going to see March of the Penguins
No, it's not just a documentary about penguins, it's "a love story" or so the theatre blurb says.

I've heard good things about it. I am hoping I don't have to see a penguin acutally make love, tho...

12. I saw that last weekend...
and I liked it. You get to see some penguin love...but no disgusting close-ups.

My advice...wear a long-sleeved shirt. I don't knowif it was psychological from it being set in the Antarctic or if they really cranked the AC in my theater for versimilitude or what...but I froze my butt off through that whole movie.

BENT OAFER!!! :spank:

I'm not ever opening panda-cam...cause I know I'll get hooked.

Good luck on the golf course. Hit 'em long and straight.

14. Broken Flowers
It may not be playing in your area yet, unless you are in a big city.

Bill Murray stars; written and directed by Jim Jarmusch.

If not, Cinderella Man is the ticket.

have fun

17. Not playing here...
*sigh*

I'll figure out something. Even if I just cave on the movie, go get dessert at the cafe in the bookstore instead and buy a book. Or maybe hit the Cheesecake Factory. It's close to the bookstore. Hmmmm... :)

...with your book.

You'll feel better than if you go for the dessert!

18. If you have HBO -- or know someone who does, save your money and
watch "The Girl in the Cafe" -- best movie I've seen in quite some time. It's about the meeting of the G-8, and how they come to do the right thing. A fantasy, of course, but really well done.

19. No cable...cut it off years ago...
and generally don't miss it. I have movies I could watch here at the house...but that defeats the purpose...which is to get out and about in the world.

20. Ah -- you are wise!
We just got "dish" and it came with the premium channels free for 3 months. First time I've watched them (but won't pay for them in 3 months).
My situation is neither here nor there, however -- so, I'll vote for the ice-cream and a book, especially if they have a nice ice-cream parlor in your town, or a pretty park to sit in while you enjoy your treat!

22. I hear Million Dollar Baby is great!
I still haven't gotten the courage to watch it as I hear it's very sad. But people I know recommend it highly.

With that, I'll see everyone later! :hi:

25. It depends on the book!
Do you have a reading list?

I think the last thing I saw was Apres Vous, which went on a bit long but was very entertaining.

From what you've told us about your area, though, I wonder if it would be playing!

28. I just had a Saturday night Double feature veg-out
Started with the more serious "Downfall". Hitler's final days that can be seen as a parable of today's junta.

Then I lightened up with "Bride & Prejudice". Jane Austin goes Bollywood. Enjoyable.

Great Hong Kong genre pic. Pretty obscure, but worth probing.
