2. I make my students use Google, and they hate it.
Teoma runs a close second, but no one uses that.

6. I know. Isn't that silly? Also, I can't get them to use key words.
It's always full sentences, no matter how many times the search results comeback saying "is" "the" and "of" are common words and were not used in this search. I don't think they get that this computer thing isn't very smart.

5. An acquaintence of mine worked there

It was all hype. They had a crappy search engine back in 2000, and it's crappier now. It relied heavily on human-assisted indexing like the old yahoo search engine. From my limited knowledge of the company it seemed like one of those churn and burn dot coms that is just living on borrowed time and baby-boom investment capital.

They were such new media darlings back when "showing a burn rate" was a sign of your company's succes, but I have it on good authority this had more to do with their marketing ability and who they paid for front page stories. My company at the time paid $25,000 to a freelance journalist, who through one level of indirection, was able to get us onto a cover of a major industry magazine. Pay-to-play baby.

I just looked at their financials and they are trending upward contrary to my expectations. Looks like they sold off their web searching solutions consulting division in 2003, which gives me a good feeling, since that acquaintence worked in that dept.
