I was told that short hair on women should not be allowed!
Edited on Sun Aug-07-05 01:03 PM by rene moon
Background: I have had my hair rather short in the past---think Halle Berry in her short hair days. My husband like short hair but that is not the reason I like it too. But right now, my hair is to my shoulders.

Last night, my husband and I went went to his friend's birthday party. It was a small gathering and I was the only woman there.

Somehow we got on the topic of hair and one guy said, "I love long hair on women, it makes them so feminine".

I then said that it wasn't true and I am thinking about going short again.

The guy says, "No, don't, you look prettier with longer hair and well, Mr. Renemoon shouldn't let you."

Me:"Shouldn't let me?, what is he, my father? I don't think so"

Guy: He is your husband and has the right to make those decisions. I know when I am married, I will not allow short hair on my wife or girl children"

I was floored! Who the **** thinks this way????

My husband then said to his friend, "Dude, this is the reason why you are with someone. You are a dick"

A few nights ago, I was looking on online for some short hair ideas and came across a message board about the actress Kiera Knightley and her recent short hair cut for an upcoming film.

I thought it looked great on her but then I read the responses to her hair cut.

It seems to me that many men felt that she had no right to cut her hair, she looked ugly, butch, un-feminine, a man, she needs to grow it out, etc...

What is the threat? I don't get it.

Someone explain it to me.

4. I have seen Kiera Knightley's haircut and it looks fabulous on her.
I have short to medium length hair at any given time. I can't do long hair. My hair is too fine and fragile - if it hits my shoulders it just kind of peters out to nothing and the ends break off. It's much nicer, healthier, and and better looking when it's shorter.

Not, of course, that I should have to justify that to anyone, least of all someone like the Neanderthal you encountered at that party.

5. I went out with a guy like that
He was an asshole in many ways but what really sticks in my mind is that he was mad at me for getting a haircut. I have always had it short. It is so much easier to deal with. But he said to me "Don't I have any say in that?" meaning whether to cut my hair. I said "Actually no say at all". That was the beginning of the end of that relationship.

6. I'm a guy, and I do prefer longer hair on women, but . . .
If I reached out my hand to pat some woman's head and said "honey, I don't want you to cut your hair . . ."

-- I'd expect to pull back a stump.

Unfortunately, it's not a very big jump from some bozo claiming ownership of the follicles on your head to claiming ownership of the follicles in your womb.

Very scary times.

33. Bingo! 'claiming ownership' is the motive, whether hair or womb is topic
Have wondered if some men work so hard to maintain dominion over the wombs of women cuz they don't have them. Do they want power over women's hair cuz they don't control their own hairlines?

Such men need to wake up and ask themselves why they have need to control aspects of females' lives. Is it because they fear not really controlling their own conditions? The boss/system really has them powerless so they have to make a show of controlling something? Is that it?

I'd tell that creep to stick it!

In this retirement community, there are very few ladies who have hair that is even shoulder length. Probably more to do with the desert heat and age?

Right now I have long hair, almost to the waist. I was going to cut it about a year ago but I want to donate the hair to the folks who make wigs for chemo patients, probably in the next few months.

Also, down here in the desert, shorter hair is cooler during the summer. I do put it up in a scrunchie (sp?) or wear it in a ponytail when it's hot.

I always say, "If you like long hair so much, then grow it out yourself!"

I personally think long hair is pretty but I had hair down to my waist until I was 21, then I couldnt take it anymore. I have had it several lengths, from medium to short since then.

I hate the way it feels, always did. It's into eveything, tangles, takes all day to dry (at least my hair did) and I hate feeling it on my shoulders.

But to each their own! :)

Geez. I mean, I have guy friends who are all "But I liiiiiked your long hair! *pout*" But that's the extent of it. I know that Briarius didn't love my short hair when I first came home with it, but there's no way he would tell me I couldn't do it. I don't understand that - people who think spouses are not other adults with their own humanity, but rather, more like children who can be 'allowed' to do things, or not...

35. An 8-year-old Pakistani girl told me my short hair looks "bad"
My husband's great-niece said I should grow my hair out because it looks bad. Of course, she has long, thick, lustrous Pakistani hair, and I have the fine, thin, limp Caucasian hair of the Hagan family. I told her I didn't have hair like hers and couldn't grow mine out, and even if I could, it would hang limply and be unmanageable. Even though I know she's a kid and doesn't know any better, I still felt a twinge of defensiveness.

I say women should wear their hair however THEY want to, NOT how their men want it. Kudos to your husband for speaking up! I'm glad my husband doesn't give me crap about my hair, for again, there's not much I can do; I can't help it that I wasn't born Pakistani!

It was part of Doonesbury, when Joanie showed up in the strip she had had that said to her by her husband and had broken his arm.

he says I do! I think such an extreme haircut would freak him out a little, so he's trying to steer me away without saying he'd hate it.

I've done every color in the book, so he's pretty blase about what I do with it, but I am 'the bosses wife' so a shaved head would be something he'd certainly have to explain/discuss after the annual holiday party with the bigshots. :-) I should have done it when I was younger.

I beg him to grow his out every time he gets a haircut. I like either bald or long as shit better than the standard men's business length. Someday, when we are independently wealthy he says he'll grow it out and get a big tattoo on his back for me! yum.

ps-thanks hon! how are you, btw? long time no type...

from Paul...a woman's hair is her glory.

1st Corinthians 11:14 and 15

11:14 Doth not even nature itself teach you, that, if a man have long hair, it is a shame unto him?
11:15 But if a woman have long hair, it is a glory to her: for her hair is given her for a covering.

Unless it's on your legs or in your pits. (This asshole would probably also tell you that women HAVE to shave pits and legs...and justify it by saying deodorant doesn't work if you don't shave. But try asking them why it works on men who wear bushes under their arms.)

55. short hair only looks good if your skin and bone structure perfect
the same is true be you man or woman

sorry

now that brad pitt is older his super short cuts don't look so good any more either, a little length softens the harshness that comes w. age

to me keira knightly has perfect enough features to handle the short hair

but when she's older, it will be aging and ugly

nonetheless it's a choice the woman makes for herself, many older women cut off the hair as a signal they're tired of being "on" and sexual and want to spend time pursuing their own interests, such independence threatens men who think women should always be "on" and catering to what looks good to their eye

BTW-nothing says "Mutton dressed as lamb" louder than too-long hair on an older person. That said, there are older people upon whom it looks gorgeous.
Many older women cut off their hair as a signal that they look better in shorter hair.

Edited on Sun Aug-07-05 04:06 PM by Misunderestimator
I'm far from perfect, but I look a HELL of a lot better with short hair than I do with long, and I always have.

To say that short hair only looks good on you if you have perfect skin or bone structure is pretty insulting to a lot of people who have short hair, men and women.

And it's doubly bad that you think women will look aged and ugly if they keep short hair as they grow older. Hello? Do you realize that it is harder to keep long hair as you age?

Wow.

sad to say, as we get older, we get less physically attractive, the hair is the least of our worries

many people, prob. the majority, are physically unattractive

agree it would be rude to say to an individual to her face, hey, you're physically unattractive but it is not rude to acknowledge reality over the internet, as in everyone gets old and loses their looks if they live long enough, present company excepted

Again... I have always had short hair, I look MUCH more attractive with short hair. Older women look much more attractive to me when they have short hair. I completely don't get how you think short hair makes women LESS attractive. Of course age changes things... that's not the conversation here. It's SHORT HAIR on WOMEN.

72. how can i make it any clearer?
short hair puts the emphasis on the face

if the skin and facial structure of the face are not perfect, it cannot withstand such scrutiny

therefore the same person with short hair looks better 99.9 % of the time if he or she has medium-length hair

no use making it about gender

men are not excused, they are not suddenly beautiful because they are men, cut the hair short instead of medium length and most suddenly look tons less attractive

if you have a different opinion of people w. short hair, fine, that is YOUR opinion

but my opinion is MY opinion and as gut reaction to physical appearance cannot be changed, it won't be changed

83. I agree with you, Misunderestimator.
I'm certainly not even close to physical perfection, but I look much better with short hair than long hair. My hair is quite short, and everyone tells me that they wish that they could wear their hair the way I do, but that they really like it on me.

Actually, I think that whether short hair looks good or not has something to do with the shape of the face -- not whether one's features are perfect.

people pretending that everyone is beautiful in their own way la la la la la, they are sad to me, it seems you must miss so much by denying your eyes and your own taste and instead parroting goody-two-shoes cliches

everyone is not beautiful

by definition of the word, most people are average

half of people are below average

rather than patronizing them and pretending we think they look good when they'll never look good

i have a really radical suggestion

let's treat all people with kindness whether or not they're physically unattractive

because if you live long enough, you too will get tired of ass-kissers saying you're not getting older you're getting better, a day comes when you wake up and say to yourself, you know what, life is too short to listen to a lot of lies

i'm not gonna say diddly about yr hairstyle to your face

but this is the internet, you asked for gut level honest replies

you're gonna get 'em

most people look better w. medium length rather than short hair

that's my honest gut level response

sorry it wasn't what you wanted to hear

but if you want a fake answer from someone who has to make you feel good, ask your lover, not the internet

I never said a thing about pretending someone was anything but what they were and you seem to be the person who is judging the worth of people on there appearance. From what you say in the rest of your post you have a real problem with getting older. I'm sorry but I'm not twisted with bitterness and yes I can see beauty in a lot of places. I'm not trying to be a goody-two-shoes for doing it, that's just how am.

Beauty 1. the quality or aggregate of qualities in a person or thing that gives pleasure to the senses or pleasurably exalts the mind or spirit

I too am just posting my opinion and if you don't like my critique of your opinion don't post it on a public board.

73. Excuse me? Who has perfect bone structure in this universe?
My hair is very fine but has some curl. If it's short, it looks lush and curly. If it's even past my ears, it gets weighed down and look lank. Also, I have a square face, but high cheekbones (Irish heritage, anyone?). Long hair takes away the cheekbones, short hair makes them stand right out.

I have very far from perfect bone structure, but believe me, I look way better with short hair.

Sometimes I wish I could have longer, lusher hair, but the grass is always greener, isn't it.

I've always had long hair but I never realized I should be using it to hide my imperfections so now I'll make sure it is always in my face. Yeah I'll create alot of time to pursue my own interests such as independence and not being on and sexual when I'm not bashing into walls and walking into traffic because apparently I should be wearing my hair as a mask.

63. My theory...
Since it's generally taught from a young age that boys are supposed to have short hair and girls are supposed to have long hair, they think that a woman with short hair is masculine and they think that if they show interest in a "masculine" woman that it might mean they're really into guys. Or not, I dunno, haha.

He couldn't stand women w/ short hair. He thought it looked manly. What happened when we had our first big fight? You guessed it-I walked in to the first salon that took a walk-in and had them cut it all off-barely enough to cover my skull.
I have thick, coarse, wavy-curly hair that frizzes all the time and is constantly tangled. It tends to look much better short because it is easier to manage. When it's long it looks like it's out of control(which it is). Short hair just looks better on some women.

71. I tell you
I know some assholes who are like that. One is a conservative moron who wants to have that kind of power over his companions. He tends to lurk here and take tidbits "home" to other websites where he will frequently make fun of things we say. But at 33 (or 34) he is still alone, and probably still a virgin, though I don't know for sure. (When I saw the previews of the "40 year old virgin, I wondered if it was his life story)

The attitude that some people have is not even conservative--it's primitive. It harks back to a day when men definitively held more sway over women, who were essentially second class citizens. Women were wombs to the men, to carry their male children, and hopefully die in childbirth so that moms wouldn't make sissy boys of their manly men children. Men could then carry out their dominance, keep marrying new women, having more children (the girl children would just make more boy children down the line for some more manly menchildren) and keep conquering the world. They didn't need to have mistresses because their own wives would just die quickly, from some disease because women were much more fragile than men, and even IF their wives managed to survive the births of 9 or 10 children, they were likely too pooped to enjoy a sexual relationship with their husbands, so men could take on a lover with some impunity, because he controlled the household, paid the bills and only gave the wife a small allowance--not enough for her to run away on her own, or anything. "Disciplining" the wife was within the man's jurisdiction as well--can't let the women get too uppity!!

It sounds almost sick to me. And it certainly explains why, until relatively recently, the marriage vows were to be pronounced "man and wife" as though the "wife" was chattel and not a partner.

94. I remember reading an article that said

something about "long" hair being preferred by men in a mate-selection kind of way -- kind of like how they subconsciously select for women with a 10" difference between waist measurement and hip measurement. It supposedly means that a woman is healthy (long, shiny hair) and can have healthy babies.

But the study went further to say that it wasn't "long" hair per se, but "full" hair that actually interested men. (I don't have a link, it was in a magazine at least 5 years ago.) So a short haircut with "fullness" to it would still qualify (that is, if you buy into this line of thinking at all.)

Anyway, when I had my really cute, chunky, short haircut two years ago, not a day went by when I wasn't getting 2-3 compliments on the cut and style (from men, too).

I've since grown it out long, and it's amazing how many people will express an opinion -- "I liked your hair when it was short" or "I really like your hair now that it's gotten so long".

I'm about to get it short again. It was just too cute that way.

believe it or not. It's silly. There are women who are more feminine with short hair than some of the ones who wear it long. And some women who have long hair act like it's some sort of sin or something for a woman to have short hair. I don't get it. No one else should make that decision for a woman. Only you know what is best for you. Period. If you want it short, go for it. It's your decision. No one else's... 105. That is the standard beauty theory.
As a make-up artist, I find it's true that the vast majority of women after a certain age don't look very good in long (below the shoulders) hair. As we age, gravity takes a toll on our faces causing the features to droop a bit and our jowls to become more full. All this gives the appearance of a face that is pulling down. Long hair worsens this appearance by pulling the appearance of the face down even further. A shorter, uplifting cut on can completely change that.

Also, longer hair on an older woman can look very dated and seem like she is trying to hang onto her youth.

There are very few woman over 40 that can pull off long hair. Jane Seymour is one -- she has very high, strong cheekbones and eyes that life up at the ends - all things that counterbalance the drag her hair causes on her face.

116. Excuse me, but this is baloney.
There are other reasons for older women to have long hair than style. I keep my hair long because it's warm in the winter and can be put up off my neck to be cooler in the summer.

Even stylistically long hair can make sense for older women. It's more flexible for styling. Ponytail, bun, braid, loose... besides, I look like doofus in short hair. I'm over 40 and everyone compliments me on my gorgeous flowing silver hair--even strangers. :)

In truth, any woman looks good in whatever hair style she feels she looks best in. The person who has to be pleased with a haircut is the person wearing the hair. No one should feel like they have to conform to societal "norm" for style reasons.

104. When I had a flat top...
When I had a flat-top, I always had more men hitting on me than when I had a more traditional hair style. Even after I let the flat-top grow out, and just had short hair, men were coming on to me.

All of them said the short hair was a turn on. That it took a woman with nerve to wear her hair that short, they liked women with nerve.

There were plenty of the other kind too - men who would look only at my chest. Who wouldn't look at my face, ever. Who wouldn't ask me a question, but attempt to have a dialogue consisting of a series of one-sided statements. These are the losermen who will insist a woman should wear her hair long.

I have longer hair now. I grew it out because I wanted "wedding hair" when we got married a few years ago. In a casual moment recently I mentioned to my female boss that I was considering cutting it shorter again (short bob, nothing extreme)... her response? "Oh, no!" And her hair is comparatively short!

The short-long hair debate is about a power struggle. Anybody who says otherwise is still sleeping.

107. I don't like short hair usually
But to paraphrase Bill Maher, no one has the right to legislate opinion. Not congress, not a church, not school, and not ones husband.

Despite this, I think Bicentennial Baby looks HOT in short hair - and perhaps she could throw you some ideas...

109. An aside: doesn't BoJo (Bob Jones University) ban short hair on women
And require it for men?

110. My husband loves short hair. Which is good because I look
terrible with long hair. Why are some people so weird? He's not going to allow his wife to have short hair?! WTF is that? Hopefully he'll fall in love with a woman who has enough sense to tell him to fuck off. Sadly, there are women who would go along with this ridiculous demand.

111. This part of what he said made me laugh
"I know when I am married, I will not allow short hair on my wife or girl children."

If that's the case, this knuckledragger probably shouldn't expect to stay married if he ever gets married.

FWIW, I love short hair on women even though, ironically, I'm growing my own hair long again. (It's been 8 months since my last haircut.)

119. Locking.
A flame war over hair is a dangerous thing - highly flammable.
