I hid my sandwich in it yesterday.
The tomato slices were a little juicy, and it might need time to dry out.

7. You need to swear at it more. |
|
That's my remedy for all things technical. First, you swear at it. Then, you swear at it again, this time employing more profanity. If that doesn't fix it, then you need to bring out the heavy duty expletives that you have saved for special occasions. Finally, if it still doesn't work, you kick it.

9. It's cursed, as mine was. |

I had a really good JVC VCR for about ten years, then a few years ago it started acting weird. It ate my tapes (I swear the thing vibrated as it did it), and eventually it just stopped.

11. If it's old, it may simply be dying |
|
I had one about 15 years old that made funny noises for a while and then started eating tapes. When it refused to eject a certain tape, I asked the Lounge for advice, and they suggested taking the VCR apart and getting the tape out that way. (It's really not hard to do.) Unfortunately, the inside of the VCR was in such bad shape that I could get the tape out only by taking the whole mechanism apart. So I got one severely mangled tape out and had pieces of the VCR all over the table.
At that point, I just decided to take the old one to the county electronics recycling station and buy a new one for $40.

We have a DVD..But we also have about 3 gazillion VHS tapes (Disney mostly) that the kids have collected and I can't afford to go out and replace every one of them.

Had a client whose 4 year old granddaughter fed the entire contents of her 'button jar' to the VCR. Once they got all the buttons out, it worked fine again.

17. some actually had/have a humidity sensor.... |
|
and would prevent running which could cause tape damage.
make sure it's got some air flow around it (nothing on top / not behind a closed tv stand door / and not dusty).
if this is the case, it should start to run after a few minutes of breathing.
