Do any of you DU metalheads like Pelican or Isis or Mastodon? |
|
Or maybe any of the other post-rock, ambient, or prog-experimental metal stuff out there? Apparently there is quite a bit of activity out on the fringes of metal. I'm just beginning to explore this genre myself, and I'm looking to find out more about it.
Anybody out there into any of these types of bands?

If you like them, I HIGHLY recommend that you check out Neurosis.

2. Yeah, apparently Neurosis was a progenitor of the sound. |
|
One of the founders of the genre, so to speak. They look interesting, but I have yet to hear any of their stuff.

It was my favorite album to be released last year. Great stuff.
Also check out Through Silver And Blood and A Sun That Never Sets.
edit: Also check out Swans. Their lead singer Jarboe released an album with Neurosis in '03. Awesome stuff.

7. Wow, you sound like you know this scene pretty well. |
|
I'm trying to start out with bands that I have heard some of , like Isis or Pelican. I especially like Pelican, and also a local Austin band called Explosions in the Sky.
Fantomas sounds familiar, but I can't place ever hearing any of the music.

9. I dont know if I'd lump Explosions in with the rest of that group |

But they are pretty good. I'd say Explosions is more comporable to someone like Godspeed You Black Emperor.
As far as Fantomas goes, there really is no description for that band. Their last two releases were Suspended Animation (which is quite possibly the strangest recording in existance) and the other is Delerium Cordia, a 60 minute long instrumental. You may have heard of Fantomas' founder Mike Patton who's been in about 100 other bands (the most famous being Faith No More).

4. I like some of that stuff. |

You into stuff like Craw or Keelhaul at all? I recommend. Check out the Hydra Head & Relapse labels for other underground prog-metal.

10. Yeah, seems like they're buying a lot of Neurosis..... |
|
...and Jesu and stuff like that. Interesting. There's a whole fringe of metal that I haven't really explored much. I need to pick some of this stuff up.
