It's grit-your-teeth-and-smile and take-one-for-the-team time
I was just informed that my husband's cousin's wife and family, who are moving from Houston to Kansas City to join his cousin in KC, will be staying the night here on Friday while in transit. This wouldn't ordinarily be a problem except for the fact that my husband is flying to Kansas City himself that day and won't be here, so I'll have to entertain them by myself.

I've met them before several years ago, but hardly know them at all. I know I'm being a baby, but I hate doing stuff like this when I don't really even know the people. They'll just stay overnight; I guess I can run out to some restaurant and bring home Pakistani food, because if they're expecting a Pakistani feast from me, they'll be sorely disappointed.

1. Ah, it'll be fine....
they're probably going to be tired from driving and won't want to chitchat.

How was the bar exam? Haven't run into you recently ... I've been cutting down on my DU time....

2. It was rough
I know of at least a few essays that I blew, and I don't know what went on with the multistate portion! Won't find out until November 4th how I did. If I bombed, I'll just take it again in February!

Are you keeping busy with political activities?

7. Work is eating my shorts.
Just got back from a business trip. It should slack up soon. I will definitely make it to the next DFA meetup with Eddie Bernice Johnson. That lady is quite the inspiration. How about you, are you settling in well?

Wanna help out on Carter Thompson's campaign? He's running for a criminal bench and looking for help! :7 Great way to meet future judges! I'm sort of his volunteer chief. I'm not saying campaign manager because that sounds too foo foo for me. :P

3. Are you Pakistani? Are they?
Just seems like an odd thing to expect of you. :D

5. They are, and my husband is
I'm not. Food is an important part of Pakistani entertaining (even more so than in American culture), and despite being married for 10 years, I haven't mastered all the dishes yet. If they want to sample my homemade mac and cheese, they're most welcome, but I doubt they'll find it tasty.

6. It can't be worse than in an Italian family
We pass negative moral judgement on you if you use pasta sauce from a jar, fer cri-yi. I vote you order a feast and stuff them until they are insensate. Let them fall asleep in place :-)

... similar situations in the past, I've always been nervous about it but it always turns out fine.

It will be fine. Don't worry. Really, I know :)

10. Order the food.
If they ask about it, tell the truth. Tell them that it is a great place and you wanted to give them a real treat (instead of what you could make).
Just put out some nice dishes and set a good atmosphere. Make sure that everything else for their overnight stay is ready for them and pay special attention to it instead (nice candles, pretty flowers, maybe a good quality incense if they like that, guest towels, etc.). If they see that you spent time trying to make your home accomdating for them they will probably overlook the meal preparation.
