What do I get to replace Norton Anti-Virus and Norton Internet Security?

I've seen a number of people here recommend free programs that are supposed to be even better than the Norton stuff. Can you clue me in, please? My subscriptions to NAV and NIS are expiring in under 30 days and I don't want to spend another $50 on what many people feel is actually an inferior product. Thanks!

I'm just going by what a LOT of people have said who think that the Norton products are highly overrated and that you can get stuff just as good for free, much like AdAware and Spybot, which I use regularly. It's more an issue of coming up with another subscription fee or upgrading the software than anything.... Being broke sucks. :(

for spyware, but neither handles viruses.

2. I use AVG antivirus which updates just about every day and

It works for me.

Free, efficient, effective.

Just download and go.

They have a pay version more suited to the corporate desktop, which is the real money they want.

i got it, got rid of norton and never looked back. it's incredible. i haven't had a virus, worm, trojan horse or pest get through since i got it

8. Last week I run into a problem with a worm

It went underneath Norton's nose for god knows how long, I only found it when I was poking through my registry.

I download Kaspersky's AV, and it did the most thorough scan I've ever seen AND found the worm activity and killed it on it's own.

No more Norton for me, F that shit.

But, unfortunately, it's free only until the end of the month (I only got 17 days on what was supposed to be a 30-day trial), then it costs more money than any of the other anti-virus scanners.

I generally find worms on my own by looking at the process list on the task switcher and the DLLs. They almost always have randomized names that don't match any of the DLLs in the NT or SYSTEM folder.

13. No, it's not the cheapest, but it's not much more than

Norton, and Kaspersky puts out multiple updates per day - not when they feel like it's worth it.

I use Microsoft's own built in firewall for XP and AVG free Anti-virus program (http://www.grisoft.com)
