Anyone reading Funky Winkerbean? Great arc about Land Mines
http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/comics/Funky_Winkerbean.dtl

Yeah, I know - Land Mines aren't that funny but they're topical and Tom Batiuk, the creator of Funky Winkerbean, has Wally back in Afghanistan where he is on his honeymoon and also working as an NGO with a Landmine organization to help clear landmines from the country. Wally has a little Post Traumatic Stress from his time over in Afghanistan when he served in the Army right out of High School.

This is an amazing story and I think you can get back stories at this link below too:

3. "Sister" (brother?) strip, Crankshaft hit a real nerve not long ago
(by the same guy - also did "John Darling" years ago).

Ed Crankshaft stops in the local VFW - laments the fact that more of their members were passing on.

Head of the VFW post says that they needed to do something to increase membership.

Crankshaft said something to the effect that he'd rather not have an increase in membership - and that the head should think about it . . .

(the implication was that the last thing an aged veteran wanted was someone creating more veterans by creating more wars . . .)
