I'm not allowed pets here where I live. I work at a kennel now taking care of other peoples animals so I still get to be a surrogate mother.

There is an old homeless fox terrier named Mikey who's owner died of Alzheimer's staying at the kennel. The woman's kids were gonna have Mikey put down because they didn't want to mess with him. My boss kept him instead. He's up for adoption, but I give him extra love. If I could, I would take him in a heartbeat.

I miss mine though.

54. There's a hilarious character

lives down the road - a small, one-eyed, black cat with two white feet, my wife dubbed Nelson, and I've now taken to calling The Lord High Admiral.

His mistress works, and seems to leave him out a lot for long periods, so he is always scrounging food from everyone. Ron, the fishmonger, round the corner, goes mad if he sees him by the doorway, in case an old person trips over him and he's held liable.

Anyway, the thing is, unless the LHA is *really* hungry, when he spots you, he begins to run towards you, immediately stops, sits down and turns round and studiously looks the other way - cutting you dead. And, you know, it's clear that he checks himself, because he suddenly asks himself, "Hey, who's top of the pecking order here!?! Why am I running towards him/her? It's for *them* to come to *me*, for crying out loud! Indeed, to render obeisance, (you suspect).

You put some food down, and he attacks it straight away, without any kind of acknowledgement however fleeting. You know on wild-life programmes, a released animal whose been cared for when injured, will often give a last fleeting look, as if to express thanks. But not his Nibs. Another thing is, he has a truly pathetic miaow, which kind of makes his arrogance all the more outrageous.

My wife calls our cat by his full name, Percival, while I call him Perce or Hubbly-Bubbly; or when he's splayed oot, full length on the floor, The Sheik of Araby.

I have never seen a dog that can get out of a yard like he can. We have a 5 foot fence that goes around the yard. The past couple of times we have left the house, we look over and Buddy is standing next to the car.
