Sharon Stone has declared herself a huge fan of "lesbian sports"
http://www.thesun.co.uk/article/0,,2004580002-2005360527,00.html

BASIC Instinct star Sharon Stone has declared herself a huge fan of "lesbian sports" such as fishing, golfing and baseball.

The 47-year-old actress believes her hobbies are very much in line with those favoured by gay females.

She told a US TV show: "I love to fish. I'm kind of mad about the fishing thing. I go back east and fish with my brother. I like the flyfishing thing.

WAIT, you lesbians have your own sports now? I find this comment sorta "stereotyping". I know Ms. Stone has been a big suporter of the GLBT community but when did these sports been deemed "Lesbian" sports

3. I'm trying to figure that one out
Does watching baseball make you a lesbian or playing baseball? And I thought baseball was mainly men and softball was more for women. Professional Women's Baseball League ended soon after World War II

5. I hate Sharon Stone
She's one of those extremely annoying people who try to latch onto what they deem to be gayness on a superficial level because they think it's cool. This isn't the first time she's said something stupid like that.

I just think it's tragically ironic considering the movie that made her famous is probably one of the worst portrayals of lesbians in the history of cinema...and it's certainly the worst when it comes to bisexual women. Apparently we're all crazy homicidal sluts.

...and cue the DUers to show up to stone me (no pun intended) because I dared criticize a known Democrat.

11. I disagree. I think Sharon Stone is genuinely gay friendly.
She's done all sorts of work with the HRC. She's made comments over the years that tells me, at least, that she's a friend of the gay community.

..I just think if she really did make that comment about "lesbian sports" it's a pretty dumbass one.

14. Oh she's done some good work
I will give her that much. I could just do without a lot of the stupid "hey I'm sort of a lesbian too!" posturing she does.

To be fair, she's not the only female celebrity that does it. I think it just irks me more when she does it considering how she got famous.

(Have I mentioned lately how much I hate that movie?)

15. I agree - she is just replacing "tomboy" with "gay" and not thinking

too hard. Plus it is a fair observation (re pro-golf and fly fisherwomen) that there is a higher than usual proportion of lesbians in these two sports.

Her heart is in the right place - but her English needs a redo if she is ever to be elected to anything!

10. Call it reality-based stereotyping.
I can kinda see where she's going with this. I fish, and to be perfectly honest, if I strike up a conversation with a woman fishing on the side of the river, the odds are about 50/50 that she'll turn out to be a lesbian. It's a sport that most straight women just aren't into, but which lesbians seem to be more comfortable with. Golf is an interesting one too...most female golf players are straight, but professional female golfers, and female course pros and instructors, are disproportionately gay.

I'm not even going to TRY to explain it (it would probably just start an argument), but that's my real-world opinion based on 25 years of fishing and 20 years of golfing in California. Sharon Stone probably just noticed the same thing.

16. Here's my thing
I get what you're saying, and it's true. But it makes me uncomfortable when those sorts of comments come from someone ostensibly outside the "family". If Ellen said it, it'd be funny to me. Sharon Stone? Not so much.

Yeah, I'm not even going to try to pretend that makes sense. I'm just being honest though.

24. It's fear.
I understand where you're coming from, which is why I didn't get into the discussion about where the preferences for these sports comes from (I've heard various explanations from lesbians themselves, some serious, some very tongue in cheek).

I really think the root of your hesitation is a fear of bashing, and its pretty common in most communities that have been discriminated against. When someone makes a joke or references a stereotype about your "group", you can't always tell whether they're laughing at you or with you. Even if the joke is funny, that makes you hesitant to laugh along with them. If you know their opinions, beyond any reasonable doubt, then you can relax and laugh because you know the comment isn't harboring any hidden discrimination or bias.

FWIW, I think Sharon Stone's history with the GLBT communities pretty much clarifies her position on discrimination against people in those communities. Until it was mentioned by a reply here, it never even crossed my mind that it could have been meant in a negative way.
