1. Most certainly a hopeless comedian... |
|
I could listen to 10 hours of Bob Hope jokes and count on one hand the number of times I'd laugh...

4. Remember his Yearly Football All-American shows? |
|
When he told this little gem, "They say when Bubba sits around the house, he really SITS AROUND THE HOUSE!" Yeah, whooooooooooo! He did the same jokes every year. Sorry, a 65 year old man staring at cue cards doesn't make me laugh. Not that I hated the guy or anything, I just never found him funny.

holidays with his own family to entertain our troops overseas. I could see him winning that "Greatest American" title over Ronald Reagan.

during WWII, and the Bob Hope Tour and the stars he brought with him meant more to the guys than any of us who have never been in that situation will ever know. It was something that made them forget for a little while. I found some of his stuff funny, most not. But he was a great guy who worked tirelessly to bolster the morale of soldiers for decades. JMO

8. Bob Hope in his heyday was untouchable |

Yeah, I'll be the first to admit that "old Sloop-nose" went way, way past his prime and should have retired long before he did. But in his younger days, he was unbelievably funny. Few entertainers have had his sparkling ability at ad-lib--not to mention the guts that he had in traveling ANYWHERE during a state of "war" to entertain our troops, which he did tirelessly throughout his life.
Don't let the Bob Hope of the late 70s-80s-90s get you down. He was absolutely terrific in his younger days. My grandfather served in WWII and probably the only positive memory he had, the only memory he would even TALK ABOUT, was an appearance by Bob Hope.
