Why is it that when someone makes a rude statement or "joke" that they percieve to be a chucklefest, they inform said non-laughing offended person that they need to get a sense of humor, as opposed to, say, questioning their own suggestive comments?

Other times, folks take something that is not only completely out of context, but created out of their own mind and react in a defensive manner.

We all need to remember that anything stated anonymously in this media is not terribly crucial to our lives or well-being.

I do. I'm a social worker. We get excited when people get reflective. :)

I think that I am a bad judge of character to determine what someone else will take out of context. I just don't know the context of their lives to be able to say unequivocally whether my whimsical jab at their life will be perceived as airily as I may have intended. Hence, my personal decision to tread lightly on the jokes that may touch upon the more morally entrenched aspects of people's lives.

What I thought was a funny barb about someone's diet could, in fact, be an insult jabbing at their deeply held belief about life. It seems a tad insensitive to jump on that. But, that's me.

If, on the other hand, you had been defending the "blasphemy" thread, you and I would have had Big Trouble. I am very relieved that you were not defending that thread, because I've known you as an honorable guy and would have been terribly disappointed if you had.

That crap was absolutely out of bounds for DU, which (as I understand it) is supposed to be a place where people can have a good, refreshing fight, but where there is some modicum of respect for what other people believe in.
