Do you have a ribbon magnet on your car?
I just got back from a 6 hour vacation drive, and I saw a lot of the ribbon magnets. Yellow, Red White and Blue, and some even with little crosses in the middle.

I just do not understand the point of these things, for one how does buying a little yellow ribbon magnet indicate any actual thought or involvement in what is happening in Iraq? Is it some backlash from the vietnam era when troops were not honored when they come home?

I also noticed that some people are now putting the magnets on the side of their car rather then the back. Perhaps there is some secret code here?

I just don't understand what the magnets are saying. I suspect the red white and blue ones are bush supporters, or am I wrong and they are just patriotic people?

Are there progressive people with ribbon magnets?

These things are confusing me!

8. My hubby likes to edit bumper stickers.
He took one with an astronaut on it that said "We have friends in high places" and made it say "We are high".

He's threatening my DU sticker. I told him to buy his own!!

this is shameful if you ask me. I lost a friend last fall because he was such a chickenshit about putting a bumper sticker on his car. Tell the world what you think, post a sign on telephone pole if you have to. Check out the Freeway Blogger.

17. This is my take on it:
If I'm paying 25 Grand on a car, I'm not fucking up the paint finish.

I insisted the the dealer remove their sticker when I bought it.

Besides, I know what's in my heart

Marine gave it to me after he returned from Iraq, but I won't put it on my car because it's a special Marine ribbon and I know somebody would steal it. My bumper sticker says "Free Judith Miller and put Rove in jail".

Edited on Wed Aug-10-05 01:14 AM by BuffyTheFundieSlayer
I'm going to put two in my car windows (one on each side) and the rest I'll hang in other prominent locations. Then I'll take some pics and send them in to Moveon.org.

Here is the link for the Poster

Once you've printed it and hung it you can take a photo and send it to rovephotos@moveon.org Use the subject line to give your photo a title, and the body of the email to give it a description. Please include the location (venue, city, state) in the description.

edited to fix link

11. Here's the Best (Or) Worse Part ot the Ribbon Deal.
Down the road is a Mobil/Exxon Gas station run by Saudi speaking folks. You can walk in at various times daily and you'll find them reading their prayer book. Mind you, I like these guys, but all the Repuks, War-Luving, and Evangelicals shop there all the time.

What do they sell the most and it's in your face at the counter: Those Ribbons. They're made in China. Seeing them way less now, still they're out there - and now they've gotten so nutty about it you can see 4-5 even more on the back.

Oh and the huge crosses. BUT, went downtown yesterday and every other car had bumper-stickers against Bush, support the troops not neo-con politics, etc. It was refreshing!

14. If you really support the troops......
put a copy of the letters you send to Representatives in your windows, on their behalf, telling them to up the money they spend on VETERANS, or asking them to get the hell out of IRaq. Best bet.....support the USO. Me thinks most magnet bearers do just that.....buy a freaking magnet for two bucks. That is the least they can do.

Edited on Tue Aug-09-05 11:42 PM by Lone_Wolf_Moderate
putting a yellow ribbon on your car counts as supporting the troops is false. I support the ribbons. I have three. Much like flag lappel pins, or a cross around the neck, the ribbon magnets are external expressions of sentiments that ought to correspond to a genuine, internal, thoughtful position on issues. Oftentimes, however, people just slap ribbons on the cars, or wear huge crosses. Wearing a cross around your neck makes you no more a Christian then wearing a U.S Army t-shirt makes you a soldier. Unless one has a real commitment to supporting the troops (i.e. condemning those who attack veterans simply because those veterans might have opposed the war, donating to military causes, demanding effective foreign policy leadership, serving yourself, etc.), that person might be what they call a sunshine patriot.

19. no. I think they are ridiculous. I oppose the war, and I want the troops
come home. I feel the ribbons are for hypocrites. Some folks may have them who are not such people but I think they send a message that you're just as ignorant as everyone else about what is really happening. If you have one and you don't want to look like an idiot-put some scathing bumper stickers on your car or some homemade signs blasting the shit out of this evil administration to make sure you aren't taken for one of the sheep.

we got out of the chow hall at fob speicher and found it on our bumper! later i found out they were free bonus items inside dvd's of 'electra' sold at the px. well, i thought it was good luck so i put it on the inside of the driver's door. (my door) and, we have half of a happy face squeeze ball from donating blood stuck in the defroster vent.
i swear i love that hmmwv, although it has no guts up the hill, it's made out well on all the combat patrols we've pulled. i'd love to get a mail order hula girl and stick it up over the radio.

27. Peace symbol, support our troops, bring them home
DU bumpersticker, "not my president, still my country" bumpersticker, abu ghraib hooded guy with wires with "no more excuses, end the abuses" window sign, window sign with USA troop deaths in Iraq.

I used to be more subtle with "war is peace, george orwell 1984, george bush 2004" sign, BU** SH** bumper sticker, "GWB has more of us praying than ever before" bumper sticker. I got misunderstood several times proving again that some people are stupid.

29. many people i know...
during the election cycle put one of those godforsaken ribbons on their cars next to their Kerry/Edwards stickers just to show others that you can support the troops and still disagree with Bush.

Most of those people have also taken them off their car since then, for an assortment of reasons.

My favorite of which is that it warps and destroys paint after a while, it also will bleach and look like shit if you leave it on forever.

31. No
I am innundated by SUVs with a plethora of ribbon magnets. Yellow, red/white/blue, camoflauge, and the yellow/stars&stripes mix. Many vehicles have multiple ribbons, just to show they support the troops more than YOU do. I saw one SUV yesterday that had three SOT ribbons and no fewer than six rethug/fundie stickers/magnets.

For the first time ever I had a strong impulse to tear them all off, whereas normally I'd never dream of damaging or stealing someone elses property. After that moment passed I wished fervently I had a spare copy of Cost of War and a note to go with it, just to let that driver know how much his SUV and support of the war is costing the troops s/he purports to care so much about.

For me, supporting the troops includes the tax dollars I provide. It also means striving to bring the troops home from this unjust and illicit war. Finally it means helping to ensure veterans get the benefits they deserve. They are over there in insufficient numbers, with inadequate resources, and fighting for a lie. They come home to little or no veteran's benefits. Slapping a ribbon on my car will do nothing to fix these problems.

My sister's guy is a Viet Nam vet. She asked him what he thought about the ribbons plastered on cars. He said they ought to be super-glued on, 'cause the people that sport 'em won't remember shit when this "war" is over.

We're now buyin' super-glue in mass quantities.
