For the Birdie Lovers: Travel with the Birdie In Winter |
|
hi,
A question for the bird experts here (I respect your advice!)
I'm going to board my Murphee at the vets over Xmas. (I'll be away a few days)
Question: I'll have to bring the cage to the vet's, and it will be WINTER here. (Canada, so I mean winter!). To cover the cage (to carry from inside out to the taxi, from the taxi to the vet's) will a blanket or two over it be okay?
She won't be outside long and I've heard about drafts, and so, of course, worry. :( I just want to be sure that for that amount of time she won't get cold.

1. That's what we've always done |

:hi:
For 1 conure, 2 lovebirds: towels over the cages, right into the well-heated car, reverse the process at the destination. We're in Chicago, so it's cold here too.
I'm no expert, this is just my own experience (knock on wood). It's also what I've seen other people doing at the vet.

The blankets will cut the draft, so the brief exposure to the cold shouldn't be a problem.

3. Actually, drafts aren't the problem. |

What are drafts, really? Moving air. What do birds in the wild experience when they fly? Moving air.
It's the rapid temperature changes that are rough on our feathered friends' constitutions. Covering Murphee with a blanket and bringing her straight from the house into a heated cab will be fine.
Lucky birdy you've got to have an owner/companion as concerned and considerate as you are. I'm glad you ask your friends for advice -- too few pet owners do the same.
