Well, I feel her pain and all but you know this is another "story" that will push Cindy and her epic odyssey further and further out of the spotlight....

their public fight for stem cell research and recently Peter Jennings, everyone feels it is pretty newsworthy. But I am glad b/c it helps us realize what we should already know. Smoking kills. I am a smoker whose grandfather died of throat cancer. Yet I still smoke. Hopefully this will get a lot of people to really think about whether or not it is worth their life. It is really a bummer for her to be going through this. When it rains, it pours. I wish her the best.

i'm freaked out by the rush to blame dana i've seen all over the internet
for your information, dana reeves does not smoke
there are many causes of lung cancer, most other than smoking beyond the individual's control
let's play blame the victim another time
thank you
don't assume that because someone has lung cancer they caused their own disease

I KNOW SHE DOESN'T SMOKE. But it is thought that she may have gotten the cancer from singing in bars with all of the second-hand smoke. Read before you make such a mistaken comment. I never ever said it was her fault.

It's a human interest story that the press will glom onto because it is easier to report....
The press, I contend, isn't conspiring to keep Bush in office or keep the truth from coming out....
No the press is just plain lazy....

12. It is newsworthy to an extent. With big names dying and |

being diagnosed with lung cancer, it sends a message to the public, I think. Of course it shouldn't take the place of other very newsworthy topics, but it should be brought to our attention. I totally get what you are saying though.

Cancer is very scary. I am glad you didn't have it. But you're right. I guess Gwyneth Paltrow was thrown up there also b/c her father died of cancer. But it shouldn't become a celebrity who's who.

16. Yeah the aspect of getting the uninformed 'face time' pisses me off |
|
Edited on Wed Aug-10-05 01:27 PM by miss_kitty
I see it in the local news-kid dies in accident, the newscast turns into the weeping teen show..."he was so nice. I didn't know him that well..." And the minor temblors we get here-you know a tiny 5.0 quake and these stupid shits will take phone calls from every idiot in the world-"Where were you when the quake struck?" "Well I had just gotten home and I got out of the car" What did it feel like?" "Weird" Next call...
But I do think as a philanthropic person who has spent the last 9 years as a caregiver and that she IS representative of a rapidly growing sector of people getting lung cancer (young women who never smoked) and the fact it is very often not diagnosed 'til it's too late, it is newsworthy. I think with this in the news, it might save some lives, because people are thinking about it.

17. I agree! And Peter Jennings did the same. Even |
|
though he was a smoker, he became a huge advocate for giving the public the "real" info about smoking. He started when he was 13 and probably had no idea what the effects were. But non-smoking women with lung cancer are on the rise. It is scary.

I did smoke for years, have had an 'unrelated' cancer (I use the quotes because it was not in the smoking related areas-but who knows) and I am that much more apt to get cancer again...

just the attempt is healthy, even if it doesn't work the first few times. I will say, I had to really really wanna to do so before it happened. I did it cold turkey. But I was mentally prepared. And I didn't tell anyone. And I call it stopping. You never quit. It's like any addiction. Only this is among the toughest to break.
Good luck. :hi:

24. Thank you! I quit for 6 months last year. I loved it too. |
|
But I went on a bachelorette party with my friends and I have always liked to smoke when I drink. They were smoking. I thought I could have a few and then go back to not smoking when it was over. Nope. You are right, it is an addiction. It is always there. I know I can do it. I have strong willpower!

It is certainly selfish to do that. I have cut back a lot. But I know I need to quit completely. Plus it can also affect fertility.

(that is where the egg implants itself somewhere other than the uterus and is very dangerous as it will rupture and women hemorrhage) and I am scared to try again. But having a baby is well worth it. So really, thanks!

Turns out it was for the best with all my health problems...
We were older, I would imagine, in our late 30's early 40's trying to get pregnant....
So yea, do yourself a favor and stop the smoking....
It's just one more impediment in your way that you can deal with ahead of time....

It's not a question of a story "pushing" the Cindy Sheehan story out of the spotlight. The two stories are completely unrelated.

The more time the news channels devote to stories like this, the less time there is for meatier stories.....
It's easy to do this story.
Perhaps I should have presented this in a different way.....
Remember in Broadcast NEws...
When the Holly Hunter character was trying to get the people to embrace real news and the blow dried hair folk were walking out on her talks....
Then they did the domino's thing and all the people came back in the room.....
That's what I am talking about. It's easier to just point a camera and shoot instead of actually digging into the who what where and why....
The Reeve story is just the tipping point for me this week....
I just can't take the dumbing down of America that has happened over the last few years...
And no, I don't where a Tin Foil Hat. In most cases I am the epitome of reason,,,,
