29. Okemah is a pretty weird place to visit |
|
they've only recently embraced woody, (and even that mostly for the cash ...) but it still makes for an interesting pass through if you're a guthrie fan (as we all should be)

3. I love Son Volt and Wilco, and Old 97s, etc., etc... |
|
But then I was big into The Flying Burrito Bros. and Quicksilver Messenger Service and Hot Tuna etc., etc....

SV's sound. I finally started listening to online radio (not sure why it took so long!) and wow - what an awakening. Radio in the DC area is horrible! Well, but for WRNR, but I can't get it across the river.

10. You need to start w/ Uncle Tupelo |
|
My all-time favorite band, and the band that spawned Jay Farrar of Son Volt. Get everything by them; not a back album in their collectiom.
As for Son Volt, "Trace" is a masterpiece; get that if you can. The opening song "Windfall" is probably one of the best songs written in the past 15 years..

Mourning Jagged or Morning Jagged? (Couldn't make out what the DJ was saying...) I'm not getting anything "coherent" when I Google it.

Can I suggest Richmond Fontaine, too? My favorite band in the world the past few years, and Willy Vlautin is one of the best songwriters alive: http://www.richmondfontaine.com/

I really do need to check out Sun Volt. As for Wilco, there can be no doubt about their genius, however, I feel like I should wait til I'm 50 before I listen to a steady diet of them.
In other words, were I to shun the Mr. T Experience in favor of Wilco, it would be admitting that I'm an old fogey!

Jeff's new stuff is an aquired taste; I loved everything up to Summer Teeth, but the new stuff is hit and miss with me. I've always been a Jay guy in the Jay/Jeff wars, anyway:)

27. I never understood why there had to be feud between them. |
|
It seemed like they had been childhood friends ala Watt/Boon. I guess most all of the bands with 2 strong songwriters have had their share of problems/splits over the years.
Who knows, if Dboon had lived maybe he and Mike Watt would hate each other by now too!
