No, it won't help you trace from whence your spam comes. And also, I've just learned that pinging my router from the outside world has no effect, so that address I gave you is useless for seeing what a ping does.
Essentially when you ping a device, you send it a message that means "are you there?" and the device will be programmed to respond with a "yes, I am here." It's used for testing networks; if you can ping a device on a network then that tells you the network is working.
