The great "Songs with Mellotron Parts" thread.
Edited on Thu Aug-11-05 10:39 PM by Beware the Beast Man
Or Chamberlin, if you feel so inclined.

I'll go for a lesser known one and say "She's a Jar" by Wilco.

on edit- Misspelled "Chamberlin."

She is the daughter of Carole King and Gerry Goffin. Her babysitter when she was a kid was Little Eva!

The record is interesting - she uses a lot of toy instruments, too.

6. Nights in White Satin
Edited on Thu Aug-11-05 10:07 PM by Hardhead
There are two versions, one with a Mellotron, and one with a full orchestra. Both quite good.

I believe the album version (days of future passed) was the Mellotron version. A single with an orchestra was released later. Someone correct me if I'm hallucinating.

9. Mellotron GOOD!
Most cool that you know the difference between a Mellotron and a Chamberlin. :)

So many Moodies songs
"Nights In White Satin"
"Watching and Waiting"
"Story in Your Eyes"
"Gypsy"

King Crimson
"In the Wake of Poseidon"
Pretty much all of the "Lizard" album
"Starless" from RED - not a lotta 'tron but it is the doomiest thing you've ever heard

Yes
"Siberian Khatru"
"The Gates of Delerium"

Genesis
"Selling England By the Pound"
"The Cinema Show"
"Watcher of the Skies"

The mere presence of a Mellotron greatly increases the chances that the song will have at least some redeeming value.

First thing I did when I bought my Korg Triton was to get the vintage sounds module, which has a gorgeous 'tron sampled from the real thing.

I got a MIDI keyboard controller tonight, and I'm wigging out over the Mello patches in Reason.

26. hey Beast- questions for you regarding gear-
I'm running a MOTU828 firewire interface on an iBook using AudioDesk2 as the software-

is the Midi keyboard usb? will Reason work with AD2? AD2 is basically Performer w/o the midi clock- just a straight away recording set-up. But I would love to be able to play sampling software and record it...

any thoughts? thanks in advance.

28. Well, Reason isn't recording software, per se.
Edited on Thu Aug-11-05 11:21 PM by Beware the Beast Man
You can create and save tracks as loops and/or full songs and then export them as .wav or .aiff files to your recording software. I use Guitar Port as an instrument preamp, Acid Pro 4 primarily for recording guitar parts, final mixing & rendering mp3 files, and Reason (and crummy Fruity Loops) for synth and drum parts. You'll have to bear with me; I'm still a newbie when it comes to Reason. :) As for the keyboard- yes, it's USB, so no other interface is necessary.

30. I get it now- checking the Propellarhead site.
yeah, that's pretty much the way i thought it would work- compose w/ Reason and transfer tracks to AD2 and add vocals sax, guitar whathaveyou...

COOL!

Though just before he joined the band there was that section of "A Sailors Tale" with that bass/mellotron blast that ALWAYS gives me goosebumps!

33. That was a mind-blowing band
and so far ahead of their time. "The Great Deceiver" live box shows that band going places most musicians never knew existed. And John Wetton's brandy-rasp voice was the perfect counterpoint to the instrumental textures.

I'd put that group as one of my 5 all-time greatest rock bands.

38. Forget his singing (granted it worked much better than in Asia), it's...
his bass playing that was so awesome. That guy was playing like nobody else on the scene at the time. And then after leaving KC ... what happened. Nothing. He never played like that again.

That live album is killer. No doubt about it.

40. Greg Giuffria (sp?) was the keyboard player in Angel
I remember them! They always wore white on stage. I actually saw Giuffria's solo group open for Deep Purple on the first DP "Reunion" tour in 1984. They got booed heavily, but IMHO they were pretty good!

IIRC they had a single with a song "Call To Your Heart" in 1984. It sounded a little Journey-esque, but was an okay tune.

:hi:

I think that's my favorite Stones song too. I saw them play it live back in '89.

I think Lenny Kravitz used it too but I don't recall the song title.
