Vermeer anyone?
I know the first one is huge, but I liked it so much I kept it anyway.

4. Vermeer is cool, but -
Although it's not "correct" to say it, Dutch painting leaves me pretty cold. But you've got to give it to Vermeer for his light. I remember being in a largeish gallery-room in the Met museum a while ago, filled with Dutch paintings, a small handful of which are by Vermeer: his had all had this incomparable light, while all the rest of them were awful muddy.

One thing that always strikes me about Dutch paintings, as opposed to French, Italian, hell, even English, is this: Are the Dutch people really such an awkward and ugly-looking nation? Or did their painters have a contrary streak, and just avoid painting the Dutchmen and Dutchwomen hotties around them?

7. I think they just went for the plain folk around them...
...instead of the high-class stuff.

For what it's worth, here's "Girl With a Pearl Earring".

13. Man that was one of the best books I have read in a long
time...

The movie was true to the book and kept the silence and all the creativity trying to burst out in an excellent balance.....

5. Nice...
Vermeer is one of few painters I can think of...and possibly the earliest I can think of...whose work almost tricks the eye and mind into thinking that what you're looking at isn't a painting at all.

10. Woman Holding a Balance

The light. The textures. The symbolism. How perfect does it get?

Are you familiar with Henrick Avercamp? He's a lesser known "northern" artist but his little paintings are captivating.
