What software platforms are the candidates' official sites using
George W. Bush: Microsoft IIS on Windows 2000

Wesley Clark: Apache on Linux

Howard Dean: Apache on FreeBSD

John Edwards: Microsoft IIS "behind a computer running NetWare"

Richard Gephardt: Microsoft IIS on Windows 2000

John Kerry: Apache on Linux

Dennis Kucinich Apache on Linux

Carol Mosely-Braun: Apache on FreeBSD

Al Sharpton: Apache on Solaris 8

Joe Lieberman: Apache on FreeBSD

For what it's worth, the Republican National Committee is running Microsoft IIS on Windows 2000, while the Democratic National Committee is running Apache on Linux.

As of this writing, November 5, 2003, the RNC has an uptime of 4.26 days (maximum of 39.04) and a 90-day moving average of 16.91. The DNC has an uptime of 445.02 days (also the maximum) and a 90-day moving average of 395.38 days.

3. Translation
The most popular computer operating system by far is Microsoft's Windows, though it is being challenged by both Apple/Mac and Linux. Linux is one of many varieties of "open-source software" that are generally not owned by corporate entities and can be acquired at no charge.

Because open-source software is more stable and flexible, it is widely favored by professionals. Most websites are hosted on servers running Apache software, which is generally used in conjunction with Linux or FreeBSD. (I think Solaris is another open-source program.)

Many people see Apache servers as a sign of coolness, or simply common sense, since they're more secure from computer bugs and viruses. Windows servers suck - like just about everything Microshaft makes.

9. Saying that Apple/Mac Pose A Challenge to Windows
is like saying Scientology poses a challenge to the Catholic church.

13. Well, Linux is definitely a threat to Microsoft.
I'm not all that familiar with McTrends, but it's still a force to be reckoned with, and I've read articles suggesting that some people are switching to Mac to escape Windows' eternal problems. Plus, Apple's newest OS upgrade is said to be fair draw, also.

4. Linux is better than M$
Edited on Sat Nov-08-03 11:15 PM by retyred
Runs longer and better than M$ with a lot less downtime due to software/virus glitches.

On Edit: All the alternative software offerings are better than M$ and those in the know have abandoned M$ for reliability.

2. What programs are they PROMOTING?
I think someone posted this, or something similar, a day or two ago. I would LOVE to see candidates for public office begin bashing Microsoft and promoting Linux. I'm aware of just one candidate in the U.S. who has done this to date. It would be nice to see several hundred candidates for local offices across the U.S. follow suit. Would that make Bill Gates' day, or WHAT?

10. and that would prove what?
That they are against profitable businesses?

Give me a break. They need to focus on the issues, not a software company in Redmond.

12. Wake Up!
Microsoft a "profitable business"??? How about ILLEGAL MONOPOLY and THREAT TO CONSUMERS AND NATIONAL SECURITY.

Sheez, if you don't think Microsoft is an issue you need to do some homework.

5. Clark (a Linux guy) vs. * (Bill Gates' ass-kisser)
The fight against evil isn't just on the blogs. It's on the OSes.

7. Solaris - expensive?
Edited on Sat Nov-08-03 11:42 PM by Chief
Only if you run it on Sun Hardware.

There is a version of Solaris for x86 systems. Under Solaris 8.0, it was a free download. I've heard that For Solaris 9.0, it is a $25 fee that Sun uses for supporting the x86 drivers, as most hardware manufacturers won't develop drivers for Solaris x86.
