OSU's Clarett skips class, sleeps thru black history & is failing phys ed
Clarett caught sleeping during class
http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=1657021&partnersite=espn

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Suspended Ohio State tailback Maurice Clarett is flunking two classes, including a physical education course, according to two letters obtained by the Columbus Dispatch Friday.

Clarett has been warned that his failing or withdrawing from the classes would make it harder for him to be reinstated.

A letter by athletic director Andy Geiger said an African American studies professor had forbidden Clarett from returning to her class after he missed at least five sessions and slept during others.

In another letter, a university attorney warned Clarett that he was flunking a physical education course after he failed to turn in assignments. Clarett's academic troubles come on the heels of his suspension and a misdemeanor charge of filing a false police report about a burglary from a car he had borrowed...

1. He's not on the team. I hate to break that to you.
He's probably not the only college student in the country to be doing poorly in class, but he's not on the football team. I don't wish any ill will on Clarett, but his problems are no longer the football team's responsibility.

And anyway, it's not like he was convicted of assault because he smacked somebody with a beer bottle. What is the proper response from the team if a player does that, anyway? A one game suspension? Why don't you post about that?

2. Your post reminded me of a televised strangling during a game
OSU v Wisconsin

Still don't understand why this guy is on the streets.

Reynolds' punishment. At least he apologized, though. And he wasn't convicted of assault, like some people I could name.

I do think you're overreacting if you don't understand why he's still on the streets. Again, it's not like he smacked a guy with a beer bottle and caused serious injury. Sorgi was playing the next week, although he has been injured again, and I don't know if he's back or not.

Edited for a typo.

6. I SAW the Reynolds attack. I read about the other.
Just what did you see?

I SAW a garrotting.

Would that be an assault?

Would it be more?

7. You didn't see a garrotting.
Edited on Sun Nov-09-03 02:35 AM by Ohio Dem
Words mean things.

Garrotting defined.

No, it wasn't ruled an assault. So, no, it wouldn't be more.

On edit: I want to be clear about what you said. Since Marlin Jackon's assault wasn't televised, it didn't happen? Having only read about it causes you to think it is less serious than something (not a crime) that you saw? I don't think you are being very reasonable.

8. If that happened outside the stadium, that's NOT a felony?

9. Assuming it is, OSU did the right thing.
Felony = One Game Suspension.

At least, according to Michigan. I don't (and, again, didn't) agree.

BTW, I further edited my previous post.

11. That's because there wasn't one.
As you pointed out, the incident was televised. So if the DA in Wisconsin saw a law being broken, you would have heard about a trial. Thank you for this, by the way. I was ready to concede that maybe a crime was committed, but nobody in Wisconsin (nobody hates OSU like Wisconsin - not even Michigan) thought so. So there must not have been a real crime, just a really bad example of bad sportsmanship. Really bad. Embarrassing. I was really pissed about it, as a matter of fact, and I'm not entirely done being pissed about it.

And he should have gotten at least three games in my opinion. That's thrice what a convicted felon at Michigan got.

14. What I SAW was a felony in every state. Should athletes be...
...given a pass for what they do on the field?

I'm talking about the application of the criminal law code to athletes in action (please excuse the pun).

If OSU had won that game, would there still have been a turning of the head from the local prosecutor?

17. Ask them, not me.
I don't know the answer to the "if Ohio State would've won" question concerning the Wisconsin DA's. I have a feeling, though, that it doesn't matter to them. They prosecute losers all the time. Usually, it's the winner that isn't prosecuted (think Enron). I don't know, though. I do know that they have plenty of evidence, assuming it is a crime. By the Marlin Jackson precedent, though, it would only have resulted in a year's worth of probation and a one-game suspension. He got the suspension.

I think that Reynolds' suspension would have been longer if OSU would've won, but I don't have any real reason to think that. Just a gut feeling, if you know what I mean.

20. Just yesterday...
...I saw a man run as FAST as he could, and dive at another man, driving his head into the guy and knocking him to the ground. He did this SEVERAL times in a three-hour period!

And the cops did NOTHING! What the hell???

Isn't that assault? He kept forcing the man to the ground against his will!!!

How can you stand idly by and allow this to happen to innocent young men week fter week after week???

ASSAULT I SAY! They assaulted him!!!!!

19. Yawn....
...a televised strangling?

Stretching the facts, aren't you?

The kid pushed his fingers into the lower part of the QBs throat. Show me for ONE SECOND how that is a strangling, or felonious assault, or anal rape (which is what people like you will be calling it next week).

Reynolds made a HUGE mistake, took his punishment, apologized for the incident, and WAS FORGIVEN by Jim Sorgi.

But some people are just so filled with hate. If you can't get a pound of flesh, tit's not good enough.

3. I hate to break this to you:
But if you want this precious jewel back on your team next year, you'd better care what happens to him. His academic progress (or rather, lack of it) affects his eligibility to rejoin.

Did you READ the article? Or is reading optional in Columbus? :D

5. Who says I want him back?
Ohio State is in the National Title hunt without him this year, and will be good again next year. Clarett also sued the University for some reason, but dropped the case. I don't know if he would be welcomed back or not, given his history. I suppose he would because he's so damn good, but not if he's ineligible.

I also note that you didn't mention Marlin Jackson.

I said "we don't even have on our TEAM." He is NOT on our team, so we don't care.

Nice try.

...you'll feel better. Maurice Clarett is NOT on the Ohio State football team. No matter what kind of Bill O'Reilly-esque spin you put on it. he's not on the team. No Buckeye fan WANTS him on the team.

Your level of vitriol is scary. I hope you don't have a bottle in your hand, or you might shatter it over somebody's head and then blame Ohio State for it.

In the meantime, welcome to my ignore list. I don't have time for hate-filled people wasting my time with ignorance and petty vulgarities.

And if the choices are sounding like Carlos or talking to you, I'll take Carlos ANY DAY. Bye.
