My 7 year old just told me he wants a "Bratz" game for Xmas
I said, "It's a little early to be thinking about Xmas, don't you think?"
"No."

I almost said, "Isn't that kind of a girl's toy?" but I didn't want him to start freaking out about gender-appropriate toys. I like the fact that he's as comfortable playing with girls and their dolls as he is playing Mr He-man Macho Superguy. But I can't stand these cheap-ass pop-culture toys that break in a heartbeat.

Oh well, it's a long time 'til Xmas...maybe he'll forget.

1. The alternative (if you don't want to buy it)
is to let him save his allowance and buy it himself. I make my kids split their weekly allowance three ways- spend now, short term savings and long term savings. They save the short term savings for things that they want to buy that mom doesn't want to pay for. Crappy toys are in that category.

My oldest is the only one who has followed through so far on an item I wouldn't buy him. He saved for 3 and a half months and kept the goal in mind the entire time. But he's only done that once. (I roll the short term savings into their long term savings when the amount reaches $20 to prevent mucho money from accumulating. I want them to *have* to save for months to purchase a certain item. Once the money hits long term savings, it is out of reach.)

As far as the gender issues- I guess I wouldn't have a problem if he wanted to buy it. I'd just make him save for it.

8. That's a great idea!
He's good at squirrling away his allowance and the cash gifts he gets. Thanks!

2. Watch out. Dr. Dobson says that is
"prehomosexual" behavior. He wants girls toys? You better lock him in the attic away from all those nasty influences that are corrupting his young soul.

10. Since Dr Dobson says that...
I'm tempted to buy him a truckload of dolls.

His first Halloween costume was a Tinky-Winky, in honor of Foul-well.

7. They have no feet!!! ARGHHHH!
Honestly.

When I was little I didn't like Barbies, but people got them for me anyway. I guess I liked them to look at, to be like, wow what great clothes or whatever, but not really to "play" with. I thought that was dumb...though my sister did get me to do it from time to time. I digress.

At least Barbie still had her feet if you lost those tiny shoes! Bratz, when you take off their shoes they only have stumps! Stumps I say!

I suppose I could think of the shoeless/footless dolls as amputees. That's an idea.

11. I didn't like Barbies either
Or baby dolls. But I lived in the country and the one neighbor I had was a girl who loved to play with both Barbies and baby dolls. So because I craved someone to play with, I said okay but let's play my way. We used to play that the Barbies were lost in the wilderness and we'd throw them off cliffs and drown them in the brook out back. It was great fun. With the baby dolls, we'd pretend that we were lost in a plane crash and we'd have to forage for food to feed our babies.

It was much more fun than the conventional way. O8)

12. While they aren't as absurdly buxom as Barbie
Their heads are proportionately so much larger than the rest of their body that they appear anorexic
And their make-up job has got to go.

13. Why is it "ok" for girls to play football,
but not "ok" for guys to play with dolls?

I don't get it.
