Anyone here had Gallbladder surgery? How was it?

On edit: the only other surgery I've ever had was wisdom teeth removal 15 years ago and it was a horrible experience. So I'm very gun-shy abt this whole surgery thing.

1. I did

but it was so many years ago, they didn't offer laproscopic surgery for gallbladder removal so it was full open abdominal surgery. It was literally a breeze. I healed very well and had no complications. the relief I got was almost immediate. No more indigestion, no more pain, and a lot more energy. That was in 1986 or so

2. Same here...old fashion cut you open and yank...

it out. I was very young and healthy, otherwise...but, the pain from the stones and the infected gallbladder was excruciating. After the surgery...NO PAIN, ever.
This was 31 years ago.

3. Really that's encouraging -- I am scared out of my mind and really

can't afford more time off work -- since I was out for 7 weeks earlier this year with pancreatitis.

4. the laproscopic surgery

from what I hear is no real hardship. A woman I work with had it and was back to work in 6 days. She said she felt as though she could have returned sooner.

7. My dad had it done two years ago.............

he was back on his feet and working again in just a couple of days. He said there was only minor discomfort, and a world of difference AFTER the surgery.

17. Feeling really dumb. It must be the painkillers from my GB pain.!!!!

I DO have an advanced degree from a major american university and I DO consider myself relatively up to date on current events and I DO know a hell of alot more than you average american abt this stuff.

Just shoot me. Let me out of my misery. ;-)

10. I have, but it was after a

terrible, awful, horrid bout of Acute Pancreatitis after which I was "laid-up" in the hospital for five days with NO food or water -- NOT fun. (Some of the nurses felt so sorry for me that they brought me ice chips from time to time.)

Anyway, after that torture the gall bladder laparoscopic surgery was a breeze. :) I have only four tiny scars and the pain after surgery was minimal (compared to the pain following abdominal surgery).

11. Last April I was in for 18 days with Pancreatitis. It was the worst.

No food the entire time.

I don't know how you stood it for 18 days!

The only problem I've had since the surgery is that I have to eat smaller meals more often, but you may not experience that. Some people have no problems whatsoever.

13. I almost wish they had taken the GB out then, but they didn't find any

stones or signs of GB disease. And it wasn't from a lack of looking. It felt like everytime I woke up they were doing a different scan of my abdomin.

Only good things is I lost that 25 pounds that I've been trying ot take off since college.

18. Go W/ Laprascopic

A friend of mine (or my familys to be exact) had her jejenum punctured and basically drowned in her own bile. Awful, awful death. The trocar was 11 inches, and that was the same 11 inch hole she had in her jejenum. Medical malpractice...

I don't mean to scare you, just pointing out a risk. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

On the other hand, I've known people to come out streak free. :)

21. That's awful. Sorry for your loss. It can happen, that's why it's scary.

I've met with the surgeon and he's got a clean record and says he's done the surgery over 500 times.

So I think that lessens the risk, but you are right. Any surgery can go wrong.

Around here, though I think I am more likely to die in a car accident.

19. I had the laproscopic back in 99

I was in horrible pain BEFORE the surgery. The doctor said my gallbladder had actually died and was gangerous. I was out of the hospital 2 days after the surgery. Back to work in 5. It was such a relief to get it out.

I've also had wisdom teeth cut out and that was much worse than the gallbladder surgery. BUT even though you may not be hurting that bad, milk it for all it's worth. After all, it is surgery. :)

22. I had laproscoptic surgery a few years ago

to remove my gb. It's not really difficult and you will feel so much better, I promise! Just don't watch any funny movies for a few days afterwards because your abdomen will be a little sore and laughing hurts ;)

I kept an ice pack nearby, lounged around in the recliner and recovered quickly.

I'm a big baby when it comes to stuff like this and if I tell you it's easy, you can bet on it. Feel better soon!
