But I'm playing a couple episodes of "The Dinah Shore Show" next week as part of my Old Time Radio block on my station. I remember "Dinah" in the 70's, and her having both Tom Waits and Iggy Pop on the show; that was hilarious..

11. Good lord, Tom waits and Iggy on the same show at the same time?!
That's more bizarre than Kiss on the Paul Lynde Christmas Show.

17. holy chit.
That's still pretty weird.

All I remember from 70s variety shows was the Mike Douglas Show, which broadcast from a beach in Hawaii sometimes, and he had child-actor Mason Reese come on every so often to have a little kid nervous breakdown on the air.

19. Mason Reese???
God, that takes me back; did he really have a breakdown on the air? I just remember he looked like a red-headed Jackie Mason when he was 10, and had a foghorn for a voice..

21. Yes, every time he was on that show...
He would end his segment with Mike by bawling and cowering in Mike's arms just before they cut to commercial. He always looked on the verge of collapsing in a fetal position and crawling under some set dressing.

What the fuck were that kid's parents thinking?! I'm surprised he hasn't made headlines as some goateed and tattooed steeple-sniper.

12. Yeah, Iggy tore that sh*t up
i think he even talked about it in his autobio "I Need More". Dinah was pretty cool with him, IIRC.

Maybe it was because he had the Sales brothers in his band then (who were the kids of Soupy Sales).

It was unfortunate that he lacked in judgement around the whole elephant thing.

26. Dinah was the Pre-Oprah !
...and was having a fling with the much younger, pre-Loni Anderson, Burt Reynolds!

I remember she had a nice show, in the spirit of today's Ellen Degeneres talk daily. Wasn't Dinah post Mike Douglas and Phil Donahue's daytime talkies?

I'm glad Ellen's carrying the torch with all her emmy noms !

28. Don't forget
She was married to George Montgomery, one of 15 kids born to Russian Jews who emigrated to Montana, of all places. He went on to star in such epics as "GUERRILLAS IN PINK LACE".

George is one of my heroes, actually.

I remember rumors that Dinah Shore was an "octoroon."

Lordy, but I miss those good old days ...........................
