WiFi Question: Should I buy Super G, or just plain G? |
|
My Linksys WiFi G Router (54 Mbps) has gone down. I'm thinking about buying Super G (108 Mbps) but that means I'll have to buy a new card, too.
Do folks notice the increased speed? Should I spend the money on the more expensive router plus the new card, or is the regular G (with my old card) good enough?
Also, I'm thinking about going with D-Link instead of Linksys.
Thoughts, anyone?

but whether you'll notice any difference in speed depends on the actual speed of your internet connection. If you're not connected above 54, then having a router that supports faster than that won't make a difference. But if it is faster, then having a slower router will be slowing you down. If you've got cable (few hundred Mbps) or a higher speed DSL subscription (as it comes from about 50 to several hundred in some places), it would probably be worth it.

3. Good point, thanks. I have cable. |
|
I just question how noticeable the speed difference will be. It seems plenty fast now, but maybe I just don't better because I have experienced real speed of Super G.

2. the real question is... |
|

4. That is kind of how I feel. But I didn't realize my 486 was slow . . . |
|
until I got a Pentium (years ago, of course). You get the point. Have others who upgraded noticed any real difference?

802.11b is already faster than what 99% of cable/dsl modems can put out, so it would be like buying a 4 barrel holley carb - and keeping the same fuel pump.

7. Really? Why the hell do they do this stuff? |
|
Marketing? If folks can't use the faster technology, why do they even bother?

Even the gaming argument below is largely mistaken, latency is more important than total bandwidth for these games, the amount of data they use is minimal

10. Agreed and good point. G speed refers to transferring data within |
|
the network not for speed in terms of accessing the web.
Also As I've learned for other DUers 2.4 GHz cordless phones also interfere with signals in some cases. FOR sure with mine and my cell phone. Maybe you can change your cordless phone and get some speed to the network that way. IT still won't affect speed to the WWW.

6. if your internet connection is slower than 54 mbps... |
|
the only speed-up you will see with the faster stuff is file transfers between the two computers (how big are those files, anyway?) and multi-player games where the players are on each of your computers (how often you do that?)

8. I don't play games anyway. Seldom to file transfers. |

I have a cable modem, but no idea of its speed.
