Self-Delete due to stupid question |

Edited on Sun Aug-14-05 03:01 PM by caledesi
problem. Why didn't anyone who was talking about Vonage here tell me about the "wiring" procedure which is a real big deal bec we live in a condo and my husband is not exactly "Mr. Handy Man" and I am disabled?
Is there any way of disconnecting old phone service w/o going out to the telephone box? I am a mess now. Please help. Thank you.

I don't have Vonage, I have BroadVoice, but the concept is the same.
The only "wiring" required is placing the device between my dsl modem and my computer, and plugging a phone into it.
As for disconnecting your old phone service - call the phone company?
I think I'm misunderstanding your question....

It isn't actually conected to the locall EMS. A mother was on CNN her baby was not breathing and when she dialed 911 she got a message telling her "if this is an emergency dial 911" she kept redialing, finally she ran to her neighbours to call, but it was too late.

6. Yes, their 911 service is screwed. I just keep my police dept. on speed |
|
dial.
They've been working on it...I guess. Every now and then when I sign in they remind me to activate my 911.....

12. The 911 problem isn't a problem if you know about it. |

8. I am SO embarrassed! Thank you for waking me up. |
|
I must have panicked (ya think?) and was looking at a page describing MORE than one vonage number and how you had to disconnect wiring against.
Sorry for the false alarm! Now I am happy!
Just one question though - what is the order when you have a router? I mean how to you daisy-chain everything?
TIA! You guys are great...hope you forgive my nonsense...just panicked.

11. Wall to cable modem to vonage router to computer... |
|
And also vonage router to telephone.
It's not nonsense at all. Being a technical person myself, I wonder how people deal with all this technology. Nothing to be ashamed about.
(By the way, feel free to PM me anytime you need help like this. Any friend of NSMA's is a friend of mine. :))

Am I correct in thinking that you mean how do you disconnect the phone line as in dial tone? If you cancel your 'land line', by calling up your old phone company, doesn't that do it?
That has nothing to do with your Vonage service/new phone line.
When I moved here, there was no phone service. I got Vonage, set it up with my computer....the only problem I had lasted about half an hour when I couldn't access the internet. I called Comcast, who said to call Vonage...one of them solved it for me, LOL.
I didn't have to do any kind of weird wiring at all.

5. If you are trying to connect Vonage Broadband, there IS no wiring |
|
procedure... other than plugging your vonage router by ethernet cable directly into your existing broadband router (where your computers are currently connected)... then you just plug a normal phone into the Vonage router.
Your old phone service had nothing to do with it.
Can you be more specific about what problems you are having?

7. not sure I understand what you're asking.... |

You should have received a router from Vonage that has a couple of telephone jacks on the back. You should also have a cable or DSL modem that you use for your broadband connection. The simplest setup is to simply disconnect the cable that runs from your modem to your computer, and plug it into the input jack on the back of the box you got from Vonage-- mine is labeled "Internet." Then connect a new cable from one of the jacks labeled "Ethernet" to your computer's network jack-- the same one you unplugged the cable from earlier. Plug your phone cable into the first phone jack on the Vonage box-- mine's labeled "Phone 1." Plug in the router's power supply and wait a couple of minutes-- you should have network capability shortly. When you do, pick up the phone handset and listen for a dial tone.
If you already have another router for a home network, you can simply run the "Ethernet" connected cable from the Vonage box to the "Internet" jack on your other router instead of connecting it to the computer directly. If you do this, you should probably reset that router too (power off, then back on, wait for a couple of minutes for a network connection to be established).
If any of this doesn't work, re-estblish your old network connection by restoring all the wires to their original places, and post what happened.
There is a diagram of all this on the Vonage site. It worked easily for me.
