I'm thinking about wearing a hairpiece
I'm in my early 30's & have been losing my hair for about 2 or 3 years now. I've been wearing a hat to hide my hair loss. I know alot of people are gonna say, 'go bald you'll look hot', etc.TRUST ME, IMO, I'm too young to be bald. Last summer I thought I'd get a buzz cut to hide my hair loss & I thought I looked like a dork. I've been doing alot of research on the subject & know I'm in for a lot of work & maintance. I WILL NOT got to Hair CLub for Men. I've found a place on the internet that does GREAT work. They are not like they use to be where you can spot them from a distance. Anymore I find alot of men (more than I thought in their late teens early twenties)going to a piece.

I'm just curious if anyone hear wears. Please, serious posts only. I'm not that sensitive about my hairloss, but I'd just rather not waste my time rading silly responses to people who can't relate to my problem. Thanks all!

1. From a ladies point of view I'd say don't. I know you won't understand
it but. I'm sure you're handsome the way you are.

I know losing hair can be tough but you'd still be self conscious maybe more so with a hairpiece on.

2. My husband started losing his hair in his early twenties
and is totally bald on top now. He wears the hair on the sides of his head very very long. To me, he looks very very good and quite sexy.

But I don't blame you if you'd like to try a hairpiece-whatever makes you comfortable. I hope you find someone who can give you good information about them.

4. The few friends whom I've told
keep saying the same thing. I know I should listen, but I'm not ready to give up my hair yet. Yes, I know I'm insecure. Yes, I know I'm vain. Yes, I know alot of movie stars where them & some look good, some not so good. Thanks for the replys!

3. Embrace your baldness. Trust me on this.
I'm a woman and I cannot stand a guy with a hairpiece. I'm not sure why but it's a major turnoff for me and for most of my friends.

5. What about the idea of just accepting your baldness?
It's just one of those things that happens.

7. don't do it
women don't find it sexy, and men will think you're a loser

at least if you're just open about your baldness, that's pretty respectable

8. Cut it all off
Nothing more pitiful than a guy in a hairpiece.

If you love something, let it go. If it doesn't come back, it was never meant to be.

Taylor. He's not pitiful.

And respond to hair loss posts on DU. I think the key to losing your hair with style is don't get too heavy. And stay out of the sun.

10. Don't do it - accept it
and just wear what's left of your hair short - it can look quite good and it'll be easy to maintain.

I have a "very high forehead" so now I just have a 0 haircut - just run the clippers over my head and it's done.

You've obviously given this a lot of thought and done your homework. As long as it looks natural, more power to you! And it's got to be better than the hat...:-)

15. Go for it. You have nothing to lose by trying it out. It's so easy..
for us women to give advice when most of us don't have that problem. As you stated, we can't relate. I agree with that. As a woman, I know if I lost my hair I would wear a wig. Why shouldn't men be able to do the same? Go for it and let us know how you like it.

don't do it! i can't stand fake hair on men and i'm a woman. my boss was balding and he decided to get a weave about 2 years ago. he's forever running to the hair place to get it dyed and tightened. it just makes him seem fussy and and insecure. his appearance didn't really change either. just keep it short and you'll be fine. men are allowed to go bald, that's just the way it is.

jmo.

18. Don't do it
Shave your head instead; I've been doing it since I was balding in my lsate 20's, and it was the best thing I ever did. I haven't met a women yet who didn't at least think it was attractive, so I'd do this instead.

19. my friend uses hair club for men, they can do a great job
Edited on Sun Aug-14-05 08:31 PM by pitohui
not sure what yr complaint is w. them, they're fine & catch match yr hair & provide a choice of styles

to me seemed a bit pricey tho

if you can get quality for a better price, i vote go for it

you'd be surprised how good pieces can look now

my friend reports his head can feel warm, it's like wearing a hat, so be aware of that if you get overheated easily or work outside a lot

as far as maintenance, yes, there is maintaining, but if you shave your head, that's every day, dude, every damn day to shave all of your head where it isn't bald, or even if you just cut it super-short, my friend had to trim really every 3 days or so, hair club is way less maintaining than that, it's a once every month or two deal

20. I am a woman with hair loss.
So I can relate to your problem. I have alopecia over a good portion of my body, including around 70% hair loss on my head. I used to hide it by growing my hair long or wearing hats, but when the loss became too severe I just said "fuck it!" and buzzed the old bean. Now I look like a dalmation. :D

I have given thought to wearing a wig, and have been encouraged to do so by family, but I find that it just isn't for me.

Do I feel uncomfortable on occassion? Yup. Do people stare? Sometimes. Do I feel a little less feminine? Yeah, I gotta admitt I do. But I would feel much worse if I were to pretend it isn't happening and tried to hide under a wig. Having worn them for plays I know that they can be hot, uncomfortable, and can make you a bit paranoid about if they are looking right.

And as someone who has done make-up and hair for 15 years I can tell you this -- there isn't a hairpiece on the market that can't be spotted up close, even the best of them.

Have you ever watched the Bravo series "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy"? They did an episode with a young man -- early 30s -- who had been losing his hair for a very long time, and was never seen without his rug. I suggest you rent that from Netflix and watch it. He thought he was too young and too dory looking sans rug. He was wrong (as are most guys).

My advice? Just say no to hairpieces. Wear hot-looking shirts, smile a lot, make deep eye contact, and women will not be noticing the naked bean. (Most women I know are hugely turned-off to rugs -- they make a guy look deeply insecure -- and that's not sexy.)

22. baldness/attractiveness is not really an age thing
i knew a guy who started shaving his head while a teen because he knew he would go bald based on his family. i thought he looked a lot better after he cut it all off. i would say the same about some other guys who look far better bald.

but you should do whatever you feel most comfortable with. perhaps even try going bald for a while. you might get used to it and end up really liking it. many times it's just a matter of getting used to it.

23. I asked about this a week ago or so
prompted by a guy I saw, in his late 50's or so, who was wearing one that looked like a brown-colored koosh ball.. Like the beer commercial says, it couldn't have looked phonier if it had a chin strap. I think they all look really fake.

I can't really judge since I have a Columbo-esque head of hair, but I say pass.

24. Have you considered Rogaine or Propecia?
Since you're still young and just starting to lose your hair, they would probably work for you. Talk to your doctor.

26. My issue isn't hair loss, but I kind of understand how you feel.
People have always told me I look great in glasses, but I've worn contacts for years despite the cost and aggravation (I have a difficult prescription) because I was convinced for the longest time that glasses looked horribly ugly; I was teased for them so much as a child. Even hearing that they looked sexy from men, including my husband, just wouldn't convince me. I had to become comfortable with it in my own time. Now, I wear glasses more often than not, though I still have the contacts for the times I relapse. I still have a hard time feeling attractive wearing them, sometimes. My husband loves it, though.

If/until you become comfortable with your hair loss, I see nothing wrong with wearing a good hair piece. You'd probably look just as great, if not better, bald, but only you can make yourself feel comfortable with that. Personally, I find baldness sexy, and I know I'm not the only woman that thinks so. But, I know that isn't always convincing to hear.
