@*%$#! Oversized pick-ups and SUVs "parked" in compact...
spots... I need to vent. This is the second time in six months I have had to climb through the back hatch over the back seat to get into my car, having been left with six inches on either side by gargantuan SUV's and extended cab pick-up trucks that thought they'd just "squeeze" into the compact spaces on either side of me. Damn, I am so pissed!

No, I didn't key them. I didn't even leave a nasty note, figuring that would probably just give them a laugh. What is it about drivers of these gargantuan vehicles that makes them so self-absorbed and rude? ARRRRRRGH!

I used to work with a woman who would find dog shit and wipe it under their door handles and under their windshield wipers. We all knew that it was a good idea *not to piss off Renee.*

I'd like to carry a boot in my car just for such emergencies. Give them similar difficulties with leaving the parking lot.

6. i have to be honest here, parking spaces are too small in general
having just purchased a relatively big car (93 crown victoria) i'm going to have to say that most parking spaces are too small. the ass end of my car usually sticks out, and it's difficult to get between the lines with enough room to spare. i used to drive a honda accord so i've got quite a bit of adjusting to do.

14. sometimes... but these were marked compact cars only!
I understand about the transition, but many folks don't. A year ago, a guy who had borrowed his friend's king cab pick up rammed into me pulling out of a parking space next to me. He cut it too short, forgetting how long (and wide) the truck was and tried to maneuver it like a small car. So, give yourself time to adjust...

20. That's great!!!!!!
I going to make copies of that. It drives me up a wall when people park their damn car so close you can't get out. I have never keyed a car, but, certainity felt like it several times. Maybe a note like this like this will give these jerks a clue they need to be a little more courteous when parking their cars.

8. play a trick on 'em
Once, I went to park in a lot at a restaurant and a sportscar was parked crooked in two spaces--right up front. I didn't park anywhere near it, but I left a note on the windshield: "Sorry I scratched your car. I tried parking in the space next to you, but you parked so crooked that I couldn't quite fit."

Of course there was no scratch on the car, but whatever time the driver saved by pulling that stuff in the front of the lot s/he spent looking for said "scratch".

Edited on Sun Nov-09-03 10:20 PM by tsipple
Since they think they have a bigger vehicle, they drive more aggressively and try to run over me MINI.

And who on earth can understand the Lincoln Navigator? What a stupid, silly vehicle.

Sorry, folks but I have a very hard time trying to contain my disdain for people who buy these. Other SUVs and pick-up trucks, fine. I live in Colorado, after all and certainly recognize the practicallity. But those excessively large ones... give me a break...

17. This shit fucking drives me NUTS!
They do it all the time in the parking garage at my building. Just so they can save a few steps getting to the fucking elevator. Newsflash - just because they call it a mini-van doesn't make it a compact car. And I have actually told the security guards adn had them call the city to ticket people for parking their SUVs in the compact car spaces. Bastards.

Expensive, they are and the bigger the SUV, the more expensive the tires.

(Colorado, lives in Mountains, must make it to client site. Ergo: 4 wheel drive + high profile.)

Hubby says - carry ice pick.

...by doing this, leaving my JUST ENOUGH room to the left of him for me to shoehorn my 1991 Honda Civic (RIP) just centimeters from his driver-side door. I could get out, but he couldn't. That'll learn him.

23. If it's an attended parking lot,
or belongs to a particular retail establishment, complain about it. The more complaints they get, the more they'll patrol and ticket cars parking inappropriately.

The things people will do to save themselves a bit of walking just kill me. People who are perfectly hale and hearty and don't even have anything to carry will inconvenience a dozen others just so they don't have to walk an extra ten yards. WHY? I used to see people doing this at health clubs - fighting over a close parking spot so they had fewer steps to walk into the building to EXERCISE. People will circle a Costco lot for half a goddam hour to get a close-in spot - and once inside the store, they'll walk about ten freaking miles, because those stores are the size of 747 hangars.

I used to have a little pad of stickers that said, WAY to PARK there, ACE! You could slap 'em on the windshields as you left, just to make a point.

Don't damage their property, though - I really dislike it when people damage property in pique. COMPLAIN to the parking lot owner, and ask them to either have fewer, larger, spaces or to actually enforce the ones they already have. Write letters if you have to. There's one parking garage in Seattle that has only compact spaces, and no warning of that on entry, so it can be quite a challenge in that lot. That's the fault of the lot owner, trying to squeeze out a few more bucks by shoehorning in a few more cars - at what cost to the people who park in there, and to everyone's auto insurance? Don't tolerate it. COMPLAIN.

24. *%$&#* Hummers are the worst.
I've actually seen several of those monstrosities here in Chicago. Since there is no off road terrain anywhere NEAR Chicago, I can only conclude that the guys who own Hummers bought them to compensate for their extremely small penises.

26. All of you are blaming the wrong people
I'm no fan of the plus-sized SUV, but the real issue are developers of commercial space.

The "compact" parking space was a creation of the industry, as a way to get around planning and zoning codes that require a certain number of parking spaces for retail and light commercial areas.

As you might imagine, a "compact" space fulfills the requirements of X number of parking spaces in a much smaller area, allowing developers to build cheaper. Parking lot space is the biggest loser in the equation. The more of that you have to have, the less square footage of retail space you can build on the same lot, the less you can charge retailers for rent, etc. etc. etc.

Less than 10% of cars built in the last 20 years are appropriately sized for the "compact" parking space. Ire should be directed at greedy developers.

27. I understand what you are saying and certainly lack of space
is often an issue. But by that logic, I'd be free to go park in a handicapped spot because those developers didn't provide enough parking spaces for "able bodied drivers." The area I was parked in had about 15 total spaces of which five or six were clearly marked for compact cars only. To have one of these new oversized SUVs or extended cab trucks try to park in those spaces-- when they dwarf the four-runners, cherokees and broncos that are equally ill suited for compact spaces, is insane, rude, and infuriating.

I'm not anti-SUV or anti-pick up truck. I too live in Colorado, where it is not so hard to justify having one. But I surely wouldn't expect to park it in a space designed for a "normal" sized car.

28. I do agree it's rude
Edited on Mon Nov-10-03 08:13 PM by Robb
...But my point was really more that "compact" spaces are a developer's scam, and they shouldn't even be there. :)

(Edited subject line, since "A do agree" doesn't really mean anything....)
