Is Sin City good enough to buy without watching first?

I like Robert Rodriguez (El Mariachi was fantastic, been kinda downhill since then), and I generally like gritty comic book movies.

3. I bought Simpsons Seasons 6 and Sin City this morning...

...and I dunno..."From Dusk Till Dawn" is one of my favorite flicks of all time, so I respectfully agree with your "downhill since then" assessment. I enjoyed "Desperado," "Once Upon A Time In Mexico" had its moments, but "F.D.T.D" is my idea of "Must-See TV"...

I was just really impressed with "El Mariachi" because it showed what a guy with some talent, some vision, and one hell of a lot of determination can do with $6,000. I also liked that it was in Spanish, and that was one of the biggest bummers about Desperado (that it was in English), along with the fact that Raul Julia was dead by then and he was to play the villan.

I do like all of his movies that I've seen, though (Haven't seen Spy Kids or Once Upon a Time in Mexico). I'd just like to see him constrained on budget again and see what he can do being clever with funds or something. Plus I want more spanish!

they have a different feel than most kid's movies, they are multicultural ( not surprisingly), not bland and quite clever!

15. I've enjoyed all of Rodriguez's films that I have seen

to an extent. I feel El Mariachi and Sin City are the high points in his career so far though. I am very much looking forward to the sequels to Sin City as Frank Miller provided so many great stories.

How's the new packaging for The Simpsons, by the way. I am looking forward to seeing what it is like in person tomorrow.

19. It's awful (the packaging)

So since I saw it advertised for the very first time I've been cursing it because it won't match the rest of the seasons. So anyway I get it and open the lame plastic Homer Head and the discs are in there in a reasonable way, but I'm still not happy with it. And the first thing you see is a little piece of paper which says:

"For all those that fear change...

For all those anal-retentive nerds who like their DVD boxes to line up perfectly on the shelf...

For all those who dislike string their digital media inside a hollowed-out human head, have we got a deal for you:

Just call: 1-800-XXX-YYYY (not sure if we're supposed to post phone numbers)

for a very derivative, old-style, just-like-before box with almost nothing new or creative to annoy or terrify you. Enjoy!"

I had to laugh like hell. I called, btw, and the recording (really funny) directed me to www.simpsonsbox.com where you can print out a pdf to send in with $2.95 to get the old style box.

20. My first reaction to the packaging

was that it looked neat. Yeah it won't match on the shelf but that was a sacrifice I was willing to make for neat packaging. Noone I know likes it and Fox must have anticipated that if they are offering a new version of the old packaging.

gritty is fine, constant shots of cut-off heads and dogs eating people alive not fine, brittany murphy shrilly pretending to act not fine, badly plotted not fine, unless you're a Texas Chainsaw Massacre type of person, let it go

i'm really sorry i saw it

it isn't just forgettable bad, it's bad in a way that makes you feel unclean, seems you'd have to be a real sadist to get any pleasure out of this

I added Sin City to the top of the Netflix list...

26. I have to say that the comic/ graphic novel itself

is very gritty, but with some compassion and desire to stop evil. Very noirish. Don't know if I will see the movie, though, I'm a big weenie when it comes to graphic violence.

7. I got it about an hour ago

There isn't even a booklet/chapter listing with it, just what amounts to an ad for Rodriguez and Tarantino's other movies. Small point, really, though. I bought the comics when they came out and some of the camera angles and lighting in the movie are straight out of the comic. Be warned, however, that it's really violent. (Personally it didn't bother me because I knew what to expect and I loved the movie because it was so faithful to Miller's original stories.)

Oh, and you'll never look at Elijah Wood the same way again. :evilgrin:

13. I didn't think it was as good the second time, and on the small screen.

I bought it today, but I might rent it first if I were you. I enjoyed it, but I don't know if I would buy it without seeing it first, especially since the disc is so lacking in special features.

17. Yeah, I was bummed about the lack of extras

I watched it last night and was a bit let down by there being just the short featurette about making the film--they didn't even include the original theatrical trailers! Even the most basic DVDs I've bought have had the theatrical trailer(s) included. I was interested in seeing more "behind the scenes" info, too, and it was a letdown in that regard. Still liked the movie, though. :)

14. Rent it first

my rule of thumb when buying DVD's, unless insanely cheap or free, is to see the movie first. Netflix is a blessing when it comes to that.

I personally loved Sin City and will also be picking up season 6 of The Simpsons. There will undoubtedly be future versions of Sin City on DVD though.

21. It's funny you should bring this up, I just watched last night!

Actually, I should say, I attempted to watch. I LOVED the visual affects, most of the casting and the style of the film. I had a tough time following the story--(I'm probably just dense).

Based on your taste in film and in comic book movies, I would venture to guess you will probably like this a lot. But to be on the safe side, just rent it first. Nothing sucks more than buying something only to get it home and realizing that you hate it! LOL!

(if you like comic book pulp and grit, you would probably like it...I loved the way it was filmed and the look of the movie, but hated hated hated hated hated the substance. I walked out and sat for an hour and a half waiting for my friends.

we all liked the look of the film, but the content was...in my opinion, offensive to the nth degree. I hear it got better after I left, but I stayed fifteen minutes more than I would have liked to try and give it a chance. I got flamed a bit when I posted about it after I saw it, so I know I am in the minority here, but I stand by my assessment.

No deleted scenes, no commentary, barely any documentary at all. They totally skimped out on the features.

Most likely there will be a special edition later on.

The Simspons is great because it has deleted scenes for the first time and you have the option of putting them back in the episodes. Plus it has some of the best classic episodes like The Stonecutters and Who Shot Mr Burns.

But at least rent Sin City. It's a triumph in modern cinema. The most unique comic adaptation yet. Great performances too. You'll certainly be surprised with Carla Gugino from "Spy Kids" and Alexis Bledel from "The Gilmore Girls"

33. If you love the comic, you will love the movie. I cant stand either...

...but as adaptions go, it is faithful & to the letter.
