3. I'm sure this is going to offend many
But Bose, for the money it costs, sucks.

Cheap-ass paper tweeters. Christ for the money that it costs, one can get silk or titanium, which are so much better that there is no comparison.

Seriously, if you want some good speakers in the Bose price range, check out PhaseTechnology, Definitive, Infinity or Klipsch.

Don't get me started on their home theater packages. Seriously, I could create a multi-brand set-up that would make any Bose user green with envy for 1/2 to 3/4 of the cost of a Bose system.

4. Do you know of any system that compares or is better then
Edited on Mon Nov-10-03 12:54 AM by roughsatori
the Bose Wave portable stereo CD player that they are always advertising? Not their 500 dollar clock radio, but the compact mini system. I am thinking of buying one, but now don't think I will. If you have a recommendation I would appreciate it. I want great sound in a small easily movable package.

Yamaha- they have a couple of really nice mini systems. The sound quality of Yamaha is, in my opinion, extremely good. They have a very clean sound. I used Yamaha A/V equipment for years when I was on a tighter budget. As far as I know, all of the Yamaha minis are less than $600.

Here is their site. http://www.yamaha.com/yec/index1.htm

Onkyo- they make a nice one. Less than 300. No cassette though. Nice, but not as nice as the Yamaha.

NAD- They make an excellent mini-system. More pricey. Over $600. You get what you pay for. (On edit, Note that this item does not come with speakers, still you can get some quality speakers and still be under the Bose price--also The L70 model comes with a DVD player and 5.1 Dolby Digital Sound and DTS. Hell, what else are you going to need?)

Nakamichi- They make a decent one, however I've heard about durability problems. Is a really slick looking system though. Almost a conversation piece. Price is around $500.

JVC- Personally, I'm not a big fan of JVC, but that just may be me. Check 'em out at pretty much any retailer. See if you like it. Cost is around $300

Harmon Kardon- Decent product, though personally just not a fan of theirs. Probably just personal taste though. Can't help you out with the price.

Finally, Denon- Denon is a solid manufacturer of A/V equipment. I just don't know much about their mini-systems. My guess is that they are pretty good and go for a reasonable price.

All of the above are equal to or better than Bose. Then factor in the price. Most are less than 1/2. That's a no-brainer right there.

Hope I was some help.

9. You were more then helpful, I really appreciate that you took the time
to answer my question. I think I will really explore the Yamaha (I'm not that familiar with their equipment) and I do like the Nagamichi. Thanks again.

10. Yeah, I think Yamaha's the way to go.
I've never been disappointed with them. They have a good warranty too.

The Nak is a good one as well, bit more pricey, and the quality control problems that Ive heard of give it a lower rating than the Yamaha .

Happy listening.

5. How appropriate...
In the audio world, there's a saying: "No highs, no lows...must be Bose."

;-)

One audio magazine, a number of years ago, commented that the reason that virtually every review of Bose products is positive is not because of the quality of the product, but because Bose, alone among audio manufacturers, has a habit of suing any publication that criticizes their products. As a result, if a magazine doesn't think a Bose product is great, they simply decide not to run a review. (This is true of most top audio magazines such as The Abso!ute Sound and Stereophile.) Doesn't that sound like an ideal advertiser for Fox?
