I'm in a foul mood - can anybody cheer me up?
The computer system here at work is driving me insane.

It is so bad that I had to switch off the Bach which was playing nice and gently, and switch to Wagner (which far better matches my mood).

A couple of months ago they moved some servers from our office to one a couple of hundred miles away - half of the time this is fine, but for the rest it means that every key-stroke I make can take 20 seconds to travel there and back - multiply this by the number of key-strokes I make per day :banghead:

On top of that - the network was infected by some virus yesterday, which meant that our computers were all shut off for half of the day. :banghead:

The up-shot is that I'm now slightly over one day behind on my work, and it's majorly irritating me now. There won't be official come-back or anything like that (I have two bosses, one is in the same boat as I, the other hasn't the foggiest idea what's happening) - but getting my work done on time is a matter of personal pride, and I don't like my desk covered with these vast piles of things to get done.

Ironically - one of the few parts of the computer network to work very well is the connection to the internets, so at least I can sit here and bitch.

Plus - it's a gorgeous day outside, and I would so love to be laying in the sun with a glass of gin.

Sorry for the rant - now back to swearing at the computer.

If anybody can cheer me up - I'll be most grateful...

1. Hi TJ
Here's a  and a  for you! I have to leave for work, so no time for a long expose on why you should smile, but trust me, you should! :bounce: Also because I always enjoy reading your posts!

14. Thank you so much

I'm trying to smile - but I'd still like to wrap some computer cabling around the neck of the person who had the bright idea to move servers without thinking about network capacity first.

21. I hear ya....
Decisions that get made without talking to those who use the program/process/server/what have you first are so frustrating. I deal with a lot of stuff like that in my current job, as we have forms that were designed without talking to us, and we have to manage the data that comes in on those forms. And it comes in wrong, because the forms are poorly designed :grr: You'd think someone would get it by this point, that you need to consider who will be using something, and how it is used, before you implement or change it! What a novel concept ;)

I hope that the network gets back up to speed for you soon, and your day gets better!

2. Take a few minutes from swearing at that machine...
and start planning your next vacation in your mind, trying to envisage the place you'll want to see...

And forget about your pride for awhile; it's not your fault. And you'll be able to enjoy even two glasses of gin once you get out of the place!

AND here's a

4. ok everyone...sing along
Casper, the friendly ghost
The friendliest ghost you know!
The grownups might look at him with fright,
But the children all love him so.

He always says hello
And he's really glad to meet ya'
Wherever he may go,
He's kind to every living creature.

Grownups don't understand,
Why children love him the most,
But kids all know that he loves them so,
Casper the friendly ghost!

but we'll try this again...

Gumby!

He was once a little green slab of clay. Gumby!
You should see what Gumby can do today. Gumby!
He can walk into any book, with his pony pal Pokey, too.
If you've got a heart then Gumby's a part of you.

i may be amusing myself more than anything else...

22. Thatnks to you all
Your efforts and your wonderfully loveliness (if that be a word) combined with lunch to cheer up quite dramatically (though I'm still waiting for Cannikin to flash me  ).

Siegrfied has just made Nothung (his sword) and is now going off to kill Fafner (the dragon who guards the Ring).

But the network is still playing at silly-buggers :grr:

I think we've now reached the don't give a flying f*** stage - plus my office-mate (who is in exactly the same situation as myself) has just made us all drinks (only green-tea unfortunately).

I'm counting down the 63 minutes until I get to go home.

27. You could be one of my companies locations
whose whole system crashed not once but twice and they lost an entire months worth of data for which they had to reenter (their back up went down almost a month before that but with the purchasing system here it takes a while to get shit).

Just smile and think you could be the person who had to reenter everything.

31. Thank goodness that's over
I'm back home - a glass of ice-cold gin and tonic in hand relaxing and feeling the beastliness melt away.

To make things even better - there's a late-night prom which combines early polyphony and plainchant with music by Arvo Pärt. (Starts 10p.m. U.K. time - available on-line at http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio3 if anybody's interested.)

Thank you to all who said/did such wonderful things to cheer me. :D :loveya:
