"Unprecendented Opposition" Delays Approval of .xxx Domain Names

NEW YORK -- The Internet's key oversight agency has agreed to a one-month delay in approving the ".xxx" domain name because of "unprecedented" opposition.

That translates to 6,000 letters and e-mails sent to the Commerce Department. Assistant Secretary Michael Gallagher says most of the objections deal with concerns an adult domain suffix would have on families and children. But Gallagher stopped short of urging its rejection.

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers -- or ICANN -- had been expected to approve the change Tuesday. Instead, the issue has been rescheduled for Sept. 15.

At least having the .xxx designation would make it a little easier for parents to block porn from their kids' computers. Some people really need to lighten the hell UP!

I figure that means a: you haven't taught them well enough to respect women or b: you aren't supervising them well enough.

Every kid sneaks a look at porn, I remember how excited I was at twelve to find a copy of some hardcore mag ("Moist", I think) in a dumpster. for two weeks, my friends and I perused that thing like no one's business. then my mom found it. She simply threw it out. I got a talking to from my dad and another copy of 'where did I come from?' it's all part of growing up.

If you don't know where your kids are surfing, then cut the internet connection. It is your responsibility, not the government's, to watch them.

I don't think anyone has clearly explained how having
a unique domain for the SkInternet would actually *reduce*
the amount of mixed in porn available for children to stumble
into.

5. As an IT guy, the "xxx" domain is a steaming pile of crap.

The only porn it will regulate is the kind of porn that is already absurdly easy to block and regulate. It's just a clever way for the technologically backassed folks of the world to look pro-active.
