Did you have Grimm's Fairy Tales when you were a child?
that was my favorite book.

I have no idea what happened to it -- they are going for as much as $100 on Ebay.

No doubt because of the movie.

When I was in the military, I was stationed in their hometown of Hanau.

There's a big statue of them right in the middle of the platz.

4. Experts must think it's amazing that earlier generations survived
Between reading the Brother's Grimm and riding our bikes without helmuts, it's amazing we made it to adulthood!

Hell, I even played with firecrackers as a 10-12 year old and I still have all my fingers!

2. I may still have it
in the things I cleaned out of my mother's house. I just remember those drawings of a horse's head hanging on the wall, etc.

3. I read them incessantly
and I loved the Cinerama movie (Tagline: The First Dramatic Film in Fabulous CINERAMA)"The Wonderful World of the Brothers Grimm" (1962, http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0056700/ ) It had an excellent cast, and there was a part where he fell through a rotton bridge and was hanging through it. The Cinerama action made you wanna throw up.
I also liked the French versions of fairy tales-much gorier. Check out "La Belle et la bête" a post War film by Cocteau. Not a Brothers Grimm story, but a great creative masterpiece.

7. We always had Aesop's Fables and Grimms' fairy tales.
My grandfather was in publishing. :-)

The versions of the tales were unexpurgated, too, so they were pretty violent and disturbing.

And we kids told and retold the tales among ourselves, plus we heard various fairy tales on "Tell Me a Story," a program that aired on what was then called educational television and is now PBS.

8. I loved Grimm's and Aesop's Fables
when I was a kid. It's classic kid literature. :woohoo: Every child should get the opportunity to read these.

I'm really dismayed that some people now want to deprive children of these wonderful stories.

They helped me and comforted me a lot.

9. My grandmother read them to me.
But they disappeared in the 60's (to come back in watered down form) for being too 'violent' for children, even though the violence was usually to teach a lesson.

I managed to get copies of the unwatered versions at amazon.com. Paperback, less than $6 each. One of the old ones would be nice but just having the tales themselves is good.

10. Here's a link:
http://www.ucs.mun.ca/~wbarker/fairies/grimm/

It's the 1884 Margaret Hunt translation.

Warning: Some anti-semitism, in some of these. But otherwise, full steam ahead.
