Does anyone have ComCast internet cable access?
I'm really thinking about getting it with their new deal, how is the connection? How is it overall?

1. I just got it
I had Qwest DSL. The cable is very fast by comparison, although I have noticed very occasional packet loss problems. If all you do is surf and email, you'll love it. Great for streaming music and video too. If you're a gamer - expect mixed but mostly positive results.

I'm told that my connection speed will be doubled (to 3mb down) at no cost sometime in the next month. That'd be nice, but I'll believe it when I see it.

I've been on comcast for ten months now.
I will never go back to dial-up. :)

If at all possable, do not let them Install their software to connect you to the ISP, It's crap, I kept getting disconnected several times a week. I never had any more problems after removing their software.

3. What software are you using?
Do they try to make you use their browser? How do you connect? I thought it was a constant connection.

4. I've had it for 3 years
It's problem free for me. The first couple of months there was some problem with connectivity. Once they got it worked out, it was smooooth sailing. I have to hit the reset button once every month or so when it burps, but it refreshes immediately. I have had no down time in years. It is a constant connection, and I use internet explorer for the browser.

5. I've had it for a couple of months now.
It's fantastic, and I'd let them shut off the heat and lights before I'd give up my cable internet! (although if they shut off my lights, my computer wouldn't work, would it?).

Anyway, they gave me the software to install, I had some problems at first, but spent about 20 minutes on the phone with tech support and they walked me through it. I'm using the same browser as before, they didn't make me change anything.

I have a desktop and a laptop, so I bought a wireless modem and ethernet card, and installed it myself! Now my laptop is completely wireless, and it's great!

I've only have a few times when the cable was out, but they fixed it relatively quickly.

After the initial special of $20/month runs out, I'll be paying $45/month for the cable access. But when I was still on dial up, I was paying approx. $20/month for a separate phone line, + another $20/month for my ISP, so the cable is not really that much more expensive than my previous set up.

I enjoy the cable access because long threads, or threads with photos load up so fast. I'd give up a lot of other things before I'd give up my cable internet.

6. I Think Comcast is blocking access to Kazaa
Or it could just be time to clean out my harddrive.

I think they could be, though. Anyone else having a similar experience?

Not that I would ever use Kazaa......

7. Bit of advice...
if you're planning on using any kind of file-sharing software and doing a lot of downloading, don't go with Comcast. They'll cap your line at dialup modem speed if you go past a certain number of bits transferred in a month (somewhere in the 5GB range, if I remember correctly, not sure.) But it's certainly not the "unlimited" access they advertise.

15. Music MP3 files, I see
Thanks. Only the record labels are allowed to exploit the artists' works, not the listeners. (I have an opinion on this subject too, you see).

One of these days I am going to start turning my CDs and vinyl into compressed files to make them easier to use.

9. I've had it since day one, when they bought out At&t, Media one,
and whoever else they've been.

They're fine, the service seems to be VERY reliable. I've had two outages in 3-4 years.

18. ComCast sucks.
We had cable internet access with AT&T, and when Comcast took it over, the service went to hell- lots of outages and down time.
We switched to SBC DSL, and have been MUCH MUCH happier- It's just as fast as comcast, more reliable, and half the price.

21. I've got it.
The connection is pretty good, but I also use their e-mail service, and that's not so good. What I was first hooked up, the service was easy to use and nice to look at. Then they changed so that it is now very confusing to use and boring to look at.

22. Do get
Norton Internet Security or some other personal firewall. In just a few days in between connecting and getting my firewall up I had contracted 9 different viruses (left computer on one night....acck!). Do not connect to cable without a firewall.

24. I've got it..
Works great for me. I'm in North Dallas and getting about 1.6-1.85M down and between 350-450K up. With the silver cable tv package it all runs about $108 a month. (I'm renting the cheap looking cable modem for 2 bucks a month.)

I didn't have any problems with the software. Put the CD in, ran through the options and boom, connected. Way better than the DSL friends have in the area, and I am anti Bell so I don't believe in having a home phone land line.
