and it came up as "murder act" or something like that. I can't find the original "translation" in my files this morning for some reason.

You have to admit that "murder act" sounds a bit worse than "character assassination".

I did a Google-search of that phrase, and came up with a bunch of pages (all in German) with that phrase in bold. I then hit "translate this page" on a few, and picked the phrase most likely. I see others here have already listed on-line German translating dictionaries, but I offer this as a quick & dirty general solution.
